Question 8

a) In the diagram, P and Q are two points on a horizontal plane, PR is a vertical pole. The
height of the boy is 1.8m. Calculate the height in meter, of the bird from ground.

ANSWER= a=6m A=? b=? B = 40° c=? C=90°

R ∠A = 180-40-90
The height
= 50°
of the bird = 5.03m+1.8m
A 𝑎
=
𝑏 from ground = 6.83m
c
sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵

b 6 𝑏
=
sin 50 ° sin 40 °
C
B 40° b(sin 50°) = 6(sin 40°)

b = 6(sin 40°)/ (sin 50°)

a
b= 5.03 m
1.8m

P 6m Q
Question 8

b) Solve 2 sin(x+56°)= sin(x-56°) where for all values of x, 0° ≤ x ≤ 360°

ANSWER

2(sin x cos56° + sin 56° cos x) = (sin x cos56°-sin56° cos x) FORMULA:

sin(A±B)= sinA cosB± sinB cosA
2sin x cos56° + 2sin56° cos x = sin x cos56° - sin56° cos x

2sin x cos56° - sin x cos56° = -sin56° cos x - 2sin56° cos x

sin x cos56° = -3sin56° cos x

𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑥 sin 56 °
=−3
cos 𝑥 cos 56 °
tan x = -3 tan56°

tan x = -3(1.48256)
Question 8

ANSWER

tan x = -4.4478

x(-4.4478)

x= -77° 19'

tan (-), Quadrant II & IV

Quadrant II = 180° - Ө
= 180° - 77° 19'
= 102° 41’ Quadrant IV = 360° - Ө
= 360° - 77° 19'
= 282° 41°

Ө= 102° 41' & 282° 41'

TRIGONOMETRI FUNCION IN
ENGINEERING FIELD
: Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that
explores the relationships between the lengths of
triangle sides and angles. Engineers routinely use
trigonometric concepts to calculate angles.
: Engineers also use trigonometry to decompose the
forces into horizontal and vertical components that can
be analyzed.
