COMPUTATIONS FOR DBW & TEA INCLUDING INTERPRETATIONS AND
APPLICATIONS

I. Infants:
2. Short method of computing desirable body
- Computing the desirable body weight (DBW)
weight in infants
A. For infants age 1-6 months: DBW (kg) = (age in months / 2) + 3
Example: DBW (kg) = (3 months / 2) + 3
1. DBW (gm) = birth weight (gm) + (age in months x = 1.5 + 3
600)
= 4.5 kg or 5 kg
Example:
Given = 6 lbs.= 3 months baby
DBW (gm) = 6 lbs. (454 gm) + (3 months x 600) B. For infants age 7-12 months:
= 2724 + (3 x 600)
= 2724 + 1800 = 4524 gm or 4.5 kg DBW (gm) = birth weight (gm) + (age in months x 500)
or 5 kg

ENERGY ALLOWANCE FOR INFANTS

EXAMPLE:
First 1-6 mons Subject A : 6 mons old; DBW = 6 kilos
• Formula : TEA (kcals/day) = Answer: TEA/day = 6 kg x 120 kcals / kg DBW
120 kcals/ kg. DBW = 720 kcal/day 0r 700 kcal/day

7 mons up to 1 year Subject B : 68 mons old; DBW = 7kilos

Answer: TEA/day = 7 kg x 110 kcals / kg DBW
•Formula: TEA (kcals/day) =
= 770 kcal/day 0r 750 kcal/day
110 kcals/ kg. DBW
Points to Consider:
1. If the birth weight of the infant is given in pounds, convert first the birth weight in grams.
1 lb = 454 grams
2. If the birth weight of the infant is unknown, use 3000 grams as the birth weight
CHILDREN

A. (DBW) – Desirable Body Weight EXAMPLE: The DBW of 7 y/o boy

(IBW) – Ideal Body Weight SOLUTION:
DBW = (7X 2) + 8
1. CHILDREN For 1-12 years old = 14 + 8
= 22 kg
FORMULA:
DBW = (age in years X 2) + 8 •Note: In the succeeding years, after the
EXAMPLE: The IBW of 4 y/.o. boy initial calculation, the child’s DBW may be
SOLUTION: expected to increase by 2 kilos per year.
DBW = (4 X 2) + 8
=8+8
= 16 kg
ENERGY ALLOWANCE IN CHILDREN

Method 1: According to Narins and Well Method 2: Based on Age and DBW
FORMULA: TEA = 1000 + (100 X Age in years) FORMULA: TEA = DBW(kg) x calorie
allowance based on the Recommended Calorie
Example: Allowance for children

Subject: 11 year-old girl Example:

Answer: TEA = 1000 + (100 X 11) Subject: 11 year-old ; DBW = 22kg

= 2100kcal/day Answer: TEA = 22 kg x 55 kcal

= 1, 210 kcal
Recommended calorie allowance for children

Age (years)10 Suggested kcal / k DBW/day

1-3 105
4-6 90
7-9 75
10 – 12 Boys – 65 Girls - 55
13 - 15 Boys – 55 Girls - 45
16 - 19 Boys – 45 Girls - 40
ENERGY REQUIREMENTS FOR ADOLESCENTS

Formula: TEA/day = DBW (kg) x calorie

allowance based on Age AGE in
YEARS SUGGESTED KCAL / Kg. DBW
/ DAY

Recommended Calorie Allowance for Teens   BOYS GIRLS

EXAMPLE: 13-15 55 45
16-19 45 40
•Subject : 16 yr. old male with an estimated
DBW of 62 kgs
•Answer: 62 kg x 45 = 2790 or 2800 kcal/day
Distribute Total Energy Allowance among Carbohydrate,
Protein, Fat as follows:
• Carbohydrate (65%), Protein (15%), Fats (20%)

• Allowances for protein can also be provided based on the

Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intakes for Filipinos
(RENI).
The Best Ratio of Carbs, Protein & Fat in children

•Young children need extra fuel to grow, which means they should
have more fat than older children, adolescents and adults, according
to the USDA.
•Children 1 to 3 years old should have a diet that contains 45 percent
to 65 percent carbohydrate, up to 20 percent protein and 30 percent
to 40 percent fat.
•From age 4 to 18, the percentage of carbohydrate stays the same,
but protein increases to as much as 30 percent of the diet, while fat
should be not more than 35 percent of the diet. The proportion of
carbohydrate is also the same for adults, but protein should be 10
percent to 35 percent of the total food intake, and fat should be 20
percent to 35 percent.
Ratio of Carbs, Protein & Fat in
Pregnant Mother
•A healthy diet
•Getting the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats in pregnancy is
simple, since the ratios are the same in pregnancy as at other times: 45-65 percent
of your calories should come from carbohydrates; 20-35 percent from fats; and 10-
35 percent from protein.

•The components of these nutrients don't need to be in this exact ratio for each
meal, or even every day, but you should aim to achieve this balance over the
course of a week. A diet that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains,
and good proteins and fats will automatically contain the proper mix of nutrients.
EXAMPLE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY(Adult)

•Sedentary - Secretary, clerk, administrator, cashiers, bank teller

•Light - Teacher, nurse, student, housewife w/ maid or nasa office lagi
•Moderate - Housewife w/o maid, vendor, mechanic, jeepney or car driver
•Heavy - Farmer, laborer, cargador, gold miner, fisherman, heavy
equipment operator
