Uttarakhand Tourism- Areas of Concern: Tourism-

- Larger dependence on Road Transport

- Regular Damage of roads due to changing weather. - Inadequate rail and air connectivity to major tourist destinations. - Lack of comfortable road transport facilities from Delhi and nearby towns to various tourist destinations . - State had 22 approved hotels in 2011 with just over 1000 rooms. - Shortage of Power during peak seasons.

Areas of Concern (contd.)

- No scientific waste disposal and management

system. - Hospitals and Trauma centres with modern facilities not available. - Lack of onsite facilities for medical treatment in case of emergencies and air ambulance. - Inadequate onsite accommodation & unavailability of proper trekking routes. - Lack of potable drinking water and adequate toilet facilities.

SUGGESTIONS
- Rope in a celebrity Ambassador to promote tourism
in the state like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is doing for Gujarat. We suggest Ms. Vidya Balan ( She epitomizes culture & contemporary living) & Mr.Akshay Kumar (Associated with adventure sports, ancient martial arts form like judo and spirituality. - Develop Documentaries and tie up with international airlines for showing it during flights. - For marketing the various destinations in the state, promote Cinematic Tourism by setting up SWC System for providing clearances to film Units.

SUGGESTIONS
- Tourism

development must be promoted under PPP mode through Industry Government - Institution partnership. Develop Special Integrated Tourist Zones at tourist destinations with hotels, malls, convention centers, cinemaplexes, food courts, trauma centres and hospitals. Create land bank and make land available for construction of star as well as budget hotels to double the number of rooms available in various categories in next 5 years.

SUGGESTIONS
- Provide land for 70 90 years lease for development of entertainment, amusement parks, theme parks for developing Integrated Tourist Zones and Resorts like the Genting Highlands and World Resort in Malaysia & & Sentosa in Singapore. This can be done near Nainital and Haldwani. - Promote theme based tourism like those spun around important festivals like Kandali Utsav & Nand Raj yatra. - Better organization of world famous festival like Kumbh Mela to improve the visibility of the state.

SUGGESTIONS
- Set up Hotel Management Institutes and food craft

institutes - one each at Kumaon & Garhwal Regions - to train and develop skills to meet the requirements of the industry. - Introduce vocational subjects related to hospitality and food craft etc at 10+2 levels - Offer crash courses in English speaking to improve the employability of the local youth as waiters, taxi drivers and guides. Encourage private players to start such courses.

SUGGESTIONS
- Promote Rural and Eco Tourism to provide opportunities for self employment to the locals. - Develop and promote Bed & Breakfast Scheme like that of Delhi at places like Dehradun, Mussoorie, & Nainital . - Set up Caravan / Camping Parks at following locations for involvement of locals to give authentic experience to tourists by setting up theme based model villages.

- Ranikhet - Kausani

- Dhanolti - Bhimtal

SUGGESTIONS
- Revitalize the crafts industry of the region by setting up a Craft Museum at Dehradun. - Set up skill and training institutes at Almora Kathgodam & Rudrapur for promoting traditional art and craft. - Set up cluster of government approved handicraft shops for sale of merchandise at all major tourist destinations, airports/ railway stations and bus stations.

SUGGESTIONS - Encourage PPP mode for construction/

maintenance of existing and new roads & providing alternative mode of transportation like Heli and Air taxis. - Moradabd Kashipur Bajpur highway has to be upscaled to cater to the heavy traffic. - Pithoragarh Munshiary road needs urgent repair and regular maintenance. - Immediate attention is needed to improve the poor condition of the road leading to Badrinath

- Kedarnath Gangotri. Gangotri.

SUGGESTIONS - Unauthorized encroachments at Naukuchiatal & Bhimtal

is resulting into overcrowding & poor conditions which affects tourism and needs immediate remedial action. - Base camps at Badrinath & Kedarnath are poorly kept & unhygienic. This needs to be improved immediately. - Plastic toilets on steel frames are constructed at Rudraprayag enroute to Kedarnath. They are not able to Kedarnath. withstand the high velocity of wind and the structures are crumbling. Some other methods of construction needs to be introduced. - Sensitize citizens / local bodies for Waste disposal and its management across the state. Immediate attention is required in Dehradun, Mussoorie, Nainital, Almora, Almora, Haldwani etc.

SUGGESTIONS - Horse stables are very poorly managed at all locations.

Out of around Rs.760/- charged from a person, govt. gets Rs.760/less than Rs.100/- .The rest goes to the stable owner and Rs.100/the porter gets a negligible portion of it. Some intervention from the government is required for an equitable distribution for the benefit of the porters. - it is also suggested to involve private companies like Tata Tea, Nestle, Brook bond etc. to put up food & hot drink Kiosks ( under CSR ) to provide hygienic food to the pilgrims on subsidized rates. - Set up Bio Toilets in hill stations and pilgrimage spots.
