STANFORD

PRISON
EXPERIMENT
Students:Irakli Chuguashvili
Mariam Kurasbediani
Lecturer:Gvantsa Jichoshvili
ZIMBARDO AND HIS COLLEAGUES (1973) WERE INTERESTED IN
FINDING OUT WHETHER THE BRUTALITY REPORTED AMONG
GUARDS IN AMERICAN PRISONS WAS DUE TO THE SADISTIC
PERSONALITIES OF THE GUARDS OR HAD MORE TO DO WITH THE
PRISON ENVIRONMENT.
THE SIMULATED PRISON INCLUDED THREE SIX BY NINE-FOOT PRISON CELLS.
EACH CELL HELD THREE PRISONERS AND INCLUDED THREE COTS. OTHER
ROOMS ACROSS FROM THE CELLS WERE UTILIZED FOR THE JAIL GUARDS AND
WARDEN.
"THE FIRST DAY THEY CAME THERE IT
WAS A LITTLE PRISON SET UP IN A
BASEMENT WITH FAKE CELL DOORS
AND BY THE SECOND DAY IT WAS A
REAL PRISON CREATED IN THE MINDS OF
EACH PRISONER, EACH GUARD AND
ALSO OF THE STAFF," SAID PHILIP
ZIMBARDO
STATISTICS

STATISTICS
Recent criticisms of the SPE have focused on Six issues

 1.  A staff member publicly denounced the SPE as flawed and dishonest.
 2.  The staff's instructions for guards to be "tough" biased the guards' behavior
and distorted the research outcomes
 3.  One guard was intentionally play-acting his role.
 4. A prisoner who seemed to have an emotional breakdown was actually just
faking the breakdown to leave the study early
 5.   A British research team failed to replicate the SPE
 6.   Early publications appeared outside peer-reviewed journals to avoid
rejection
