Naval Architecture
 Naval architecture and marine engineering is the
design of floating vessels and the integration of their
components. It involves basic and applied research,
design, development and calculations during the life
of a marine vehicle.
 Naval architects design the vessels and determine
their shapes and sizes. They evaluate it`s stability,
maneuvering characteristics, the supporting structures
and the power needed to propel them through the
waves.
 Marine engineers design the systems that allow these
vessels to operate by integrating the engines strong
and compact enough to support the craft in its
missions.
Hydrostatics and Hydrodynamics
 Hydrostatics concerns the conditions to  Some vessels are electrically powered
which the vessel is subjected while at rest using nuclear or solar energy.
in water, and its ability to remain afloat. It
involves computing buoyancy,
displacement and trim.
 Hydrodynamics concerns the flow of
water around the ship`s hull, bow, and
stern, and over bodies such as propeller
blades or rudder. Resistance towards
motion in water caused due to flow of
water. Propulsion – to move the vessel
through water using propellers, thrusters
etc.
Structures and construction
 Structures involves selection of material of
construction, structural analysis of global and local
strength of the vessel, vibration of the structural
components and structural responses of the vessel
during motions in seaway. Depending on the type
of ship, the structure and design will vary in what
material to use and how much of it.
 Construction depends on material used. When
steel or aluminium is used this involves welding of
the plates and profiles after rolling, marking,
cutting and bending. When the strength of the
structure is considered the acts of ship collision are
considered. Therefore, the properties of materials
are considered carefully.
Vessels
 The type of vessels vary depending on the
purpose and the weight it needs to carry
and undergo. They may be underwater
watercrafts such as nuclear submarines,
underwater robots for deep sea
expeditions.
 They can also be typical sailboats, cruise
ships, mega yachts, or huge cargo ships
that carry a lot of load on them
 They can also be stationary crafts such as
offshore drilling platforms and floating
wind turbines
Science and craft
 Traditionally, naval architecture has been more craft than science. The suitability of a
vessels shape was judged by looking at a half-model of a vessel or a prototype. A
vessel was and still is described as having a ‘fair’ shape. Determining what is ‘right’ in
a particular situation in the absence of definitive supporting analysis encompasses the
art of naval architecture to this day.
