LETS PLAY
RULES OF THE GAME
• Class will be divided into THREE GROUPS
• Each group will be given 2 minutes to get the correct word.
• Each team must have 2 players.
• Player one will do the questioning while player 2 should
answer YES, NO OR MAYBE.
• The clock stops when Player One answers correctly the secret
word.
• No body language is allowed.
• The secret word will be posted at the top of the head of
guesser (Player One).
• The category is ANIMALS.

WATCH AND LEARN!!!
Comprehension check:

1.What was the video all about?

2.What animals are being discussed in the video?
3.How does vertebrates are being described? How
about the invertebrates?
Learning Objectives:

1. to determine the distinguishing characteristics of

vertebrates and invertebrates. (Research-based)

2. to make an inventory of vertebrates and invertebrates

that are commonly seen in the community.
(Constructivism)
GROUP 1
.
Draw animals that can be found in the community and
paste them on the correct spot in the blank chart given
by the teacher. Then explain your work after finishing
the activity.

GROUP 2
List down the names of animals that can be found in the
community. Decide if they belong to vertebrate or invertebrate.
Explain your work after finishing the activity.

distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates and
invertebrates.

LET’S CHECK YOUR WORK!!!
Determine the Distinguishing
Characteristics of Vertebrates
and Invertebrates
Vertebrates
• A vertebrate is an animal with a
backbone. Fishes, amphibians,
reptiles, birdsand mammals,
including humans, are all
vertebrates.
• They are heterotrophs.
• Vertebrates share some
basic characteristics.
A hollow backbone and the
cranium, or skull, protect
the spinal cord and brain of
most vertebrates.
All vertebrates reproduce
by mating between males
and females.
Vertebrates

• Fish
• Amphibians
• Reptiles
• Birds
• Mammals
Fish

• Are ectothermic, obtain dissolved oxygen

in water through gills, most lay eggs, have
scales, have fins, and live in water.
Amphibians

• Are ectothermic, most can breathe in water with

gills as young, go through metamorphosis and
breathe on land with lungs as adults, and lay jelly-
like eggs.
• Major groups include frogs and toads.
Reptiles

● Are ectothermic, breathe with lungs,

most lay eggs, although in some the eggs
hatch inside the female, and have scales
or plates.
Birds

• Are endothermic, breathe with lungs,

lay eggs, have feathers, and have a
beak, two wings, and two feet.
Mammals

• Are endothermic, breathe with lungs, most

have babies that are born live, most have
fur or hair; and produce milk to feed their
young.
Invertebrates
• An invertebrate is an animal without a
backbone. Invertebrates live in every
part of the world. In fact, most of the
animals on Earth are invertebrates.
• They include sponges, segmented
worms, echinoderms, mollusks, and
arthropods. Invertebrates share certain
characteristics:
● Do not have backbones or internal
skeletons.
● Some have external skeletons, called
exoskeletons.
Invertebrates

• Segmented worms
• Leech
• Spiders
• Butterfly
• Mollusks
Segmented
worms
• Have long tube-like bodies that are divided into
segments.

• Take in dissolved oxygen from the water through

their skin.
• Example of segmented worms are earthworms
Leech

• It is a fat, dark worm related to an

earthworm.
• Its preferred habitat is warm, slowly
moving bodies of water.
• A bloodsucking parasite.
Spiders

• Have jointed legs and segmented bodies.

• Have hard outer coverings called exoskeletons.
Butterfly

• Are part of the class of insects

• Have large, often brightly colored wings.
• Undergo a fascinating metamorphosis which
takes place in four stage:
egg, caterpillar, pupa and adult.
Mollusks

• Have soft bodies; most have a thick muscular

foot for movement or to open and close their
shells.

• Examples may be snails and clams.

1.What is a vertebrate?
2.What is an invertebrate?
3.What do vertebrate animals have in common?
4.What is the function of the skeleton in a vertebrate
animal?
5.What are some examples of invertebrates?
6.How do Vertebrates and Invertebrates differ?
7.Do Vertebrates and Invertebrates share some
similarities? If yes, what are those?
Questions?
• Vertebrates are creatures made by bones of a spinal
column and a backbone. The term derives from
vertebrae, the bones that make up the spines. The
skeleton keeps an animal's body up and covers it.
Vertebrates share some essential characteristics. A
hollow backbone and the cranium, or skull, shield
most vertebrates' spinal cord and brain. By mating
between males and females, all vertebrates
reproduce.
• An invertebrate is a cold-blooded animal
with no backbone. Invertebrates can live on
land—like insects, spiders, and worms—or
in water. Marine invertebrates include
crustaceans (such as crabs and lobsters),
mollusks (such as squids and clams), and
coral.
