INDIGENOUS ART &

CRAFTS:

REGION 1 & 2
INTRODUCTION
• The different indigenous people excel in arts and crafts because they
were exposed to nature and its beauty, which inspires them to be
creative and artistic. It’s often through making arts and crafts that bring
them joy and a sense of being near nature itself.
• Indigenous arts and crafts include works in raw materials such as
extracts from trees, fruits, and vegetables. Some of the art treasures of
the Philippines are found in rocks, caves, trees, and woods.
REGION 1- ILOCOS REGION

• Ilocanos are known to be thrifty and persevering people who


engage in weaving, and creating blankets, towels, table
cloths, bags, and so forth.
• The Ilocos region are composed of four provinces: Ilocos
Norte, Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, and La Union.

These are used in tea


drinking, storage for salt,
brown sugar, water, and
local wine (basi), and
fermented fish paste
(bagoong isda).
ABEL
or INABEL
(Ilocos Region)

“Abel” or “inabel” is a fabric customarily


made of cotton fiber turned into spools of
beeswax-brushed yarn & woven in a
handloom. From it comes out beautiful
blankets, pillowcases, tablemats, sweaters
& shawls. Traditional designs include the
geometric “binakol” or “inuritan”, the
spiral “kusikos” & the flower called
“sinan-sabong”
DALIKAN
(La Union)

A portable or fixed
apparatus that furnishes
heat for warmth, cooking,
etc., commonly using coal,
oil, gas, wood, or electricity
as a source of power.
BOLINAO
MATS or BANIG
(Pangasinan)

The Bolinao mat or Banig is


a simple hand-woven mat
common in other southeast
Asian countries for sleeping
they are made by dyeing the
buri strips and weaving
them to produce a design.
SOFT BROOM
(La Union)

The soft broom


industry is made of
natural corn fibers that
are hewed to produce
highly durable bound
corn straw.
REGION 2: CAGAYAN VALLEY
• Cagayan Valley, designated as Region II, is an administrative region in the
Philippines, located in the northeastern section of Luzon Island.
• The Cagayan Valley Region is abundant in agricultural products such as
rice, corn, peanut, beans, and fruits making Region 02 known as the Top
Corn Producer and second in palay production in the Philippines.
• It is composed of five Philippine provinces: Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela,
Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino.
VAKUL/KANAYI
(Batanes)

One of the endemic clothing of the


Ivatans is the vakul. A vakul is a
headgear designed to protect the
wearer from sun and rain. Kanayi
are the vests draped on men when
they work in the field. It is made
from vuyavuy palm fiber.
TALUGONG/
TUKAP
(Batanes)

Talugong commonly known as


salakot in other parts of the
Philippines is a headgear worn
by Ivatan men along with
kanayi.

of Ivatan
YUVUK
(Batanes)

The yuvuk is a sturdy wide-


mouthed ovaloid basket used
by women to carry harvests.
Made by a single weaver, it
is made of didit or nito strips
intricately woven over a
framework of tiblas vine and
bamboo.
POTTERY
( Cagayan )

The Atulu Pottery Village in


Iguig has natural red clay soul
which is used in their pottery
makings. Its locals are artisans
in the pottery world, and they
have been doing it for a long
time. They make different
designs and sizes.
GADDANGS
TEXTILE
(Nueva Vizcaya)

In Nueva Vizacaya they had a


belt that is used by mothers after
giving birth that is also known as
“Gaddangs” or “Bakwat”.
This is a modern reproduction of
the traditional striped Gaddang
textiles embroidered with small
white beads.
BUTAKA CHAIR
(Isabela)

Butaka is a handcrafted chair with


long "arm-rest" which is not used
for the arms but for the legs. It is
called the "lazy chair" of rich
families. During Spanish era, it was
used by hacienderos as their resting
chair after a busy day of roaming
around their lands and rice fields.
BAKI
(Isabela)

“Baki” or “Chicken
Bamboo Nest” is made
of bamboo strips, to
keep the hens and chicks
safe and secure while
they are nesting.
GAPPA
(Isabela)

Gappa is made also in


bamboo strips, a basket
used for corn
harvesting.
