ANGLES IN A UNIT CIRCLE: Angle

Measure

2nd Quarter
Objectives
• Illustrate the unit circle and the relationship
between the linear and angular measures
of a central angle in a unit circle.
• Convert degree measure to radian measure
and vice versa.
Determine whether revolution, degree or radian given
below. Put a check (/) on the space that correspond
your answer.
  Revolution Degree Radian

60

1rev
720

360
We have at least three choices for the unit of
measurement.

One unit of measurement is called the revolution.

An angle is measured as one revolution if the initial
side coincides with the terminal side for the first time
after the sum (excluding of course in the starting
position of the initial side). Equivalently, if a circle has
center at the origin, a one-revolution angle that
sweeps the entire circumference of the circle exactly
once in the counterclockwise direction.
Another unit of angle measure is the
degree.

One degree (more concisely written as 1)

is the measure of th of the revolution.
Therefore, one revolution is equivalent to
360.
The third unit of measurement used for angles that
we shall consider is the radian, which is the unit of
measure that directly links central angles with the
lengths of their intercepted arcs.

Since the unit circle has radius 1 and hence

circumference 2, then 1 revolution is equivalent to
2 radians.
Example #1
a. Convert the given revolution in degree .
b. Convert the given in revolution.
c. Compute 75 in radians.
d. Convert the measure in revolution.
e. Compute 75 in radians.
f. Compute in degrees.
Example #2
Convert the following given in degree.
a. revolution b. revolution c.
Example #3
Compute the following given in revolution.
a. b. c.1800

d. Compute 240 in radians.

Since 1 rev = 360 = 2 rad, a conversion factor of directly relates
degrees and radians are the following:
1. To convert a degree measure to radian, multiply it by .
2. To convert a radian measure to degree, multiply it by.
