I would like to take this opportunity to
thank my physics teacher M r. ANSHU
PANDEY , as well as our school principal
M r. M . K. SINHA who gave me such an
amazing opportunity to do this wonderful
project.

Also, I wish to thank my parents & friends

who helped me a lot in collecting data,
pictures and continuous help and support.

Finally, I would wish to thank

everyone involved in this project
time.

INTRODUCTIO
N
The electric doorbell is a simple circuit that
triggers a sound o n the co mplet io n of the
circuit by pressing the button. It is this
simplicity that makes the doorbell such a
marvel. The simple devices in the doorbell b u t
the scientific principle of electromagnetism
into action in a useful way.An electromagnet
is basically a type of m a gn e t in w h i c h the
magnetic field is pr oduc ed w ith the help of
an electric current. W h e n electrical current
flows through an electromagnet it works as a
standard m a g n et (generating magnetic fields).
When the power generation to an
electromagnet stops, the production of the
magnetic field also stops.

HISTO
RY basis
The for any buzzer or bell is the
electromagnet. William Sturgeon invented the
electromagnet in 1824. A n electromagnet is
essentially an insulated wire w r a pp e d around
an iron core that is magnetized only w h e n
electrical current flows through the wire. This is
something that can be easily m a d e at h o m e
using several components.

CIRCUIT
DIAGRAM

A n electric source, for example, a battery c an be

used to po wer the electromagnet used in an
electric bell. The electric circuit is c o m p l e t e d by
installing a push switch w h i c h you can press to
generate sound in an electric bell. The switch also
acts as the circuit breaker.
So once the setup is completed, w h e n the switch is
pressed, the circuit lo op is c o mp l e t e w h i c h causes
the current to flow through the circuit. The a r m
w h i c h strikes the gong is c onnected to a spring at
one e n d a n d an iron ball at the other end. This is
called a h a m m e r or a striker. The a r m is attached to
an iron strip w h i c h is attracted to the
electromagnet w h e n the circuit is c o mp l e t e a n d
the current flows.

WORKING OF
ELECTRIC BELL
The switch is pressed a nd current flows through
the circuit.
The electromagnet is powered a nd generates a
magnetic field that attracts the iron strip towards
it. The striker strikes the gong (bell).
W h en the striking a rm strikes the gong, the
contact is broken a nd the current stops flowing
through the circuit.
This causes the electromagnet to lose its
magnetic field.
The connected spring arm returns the striker to
its original rest position.
The contact is restored a nd current flows through
the circuit (provided the m a i n switch is still
pressed). The process is repeated from the
beginning

9
APPLICATIONS OF
DOORBELL
The applications of the electric bell are as follows:

The most c o m m o n application of an

electric bell is in our homes, buildings or
offices.
Electric bells are also installed as a part of
a burglar alarm system to let us k n o w if a
thief tries to break in.
They are used in industries as a part of fire
alarms to sound caution in a fire breakout
