Examples of Mechatronic Systems in different

areas

What is mechatronics?

The term mechatronics is composed of “mecha”

from mechanism and “tronics” from electronics.

It was introduced by Japan’s Yaskawa Electric

Corporation in 1969. http://www.yaskawa.co.jp

Mechatronics- Parallel Design Approach

A mechatronic system
requires a multidisciplinary
approach for its design,
development, and
implementation.

Definition of Mechatronics

 Snergistic integration means that the interaction of the

merged technologies creat enhanced combined effect greater
than the sum of their individual effects.

The integration may be

performed by the

Synergistic Effects in Mechatronic Systems

The synergistic effects that can be achieved from integration

may be illustrated by highlighting the following aspects:-

 Creating new functionalities

 Increasing the level of autonomy and intelligence

 Achieving high performance
 Achieving a variety of features such as precision, low
cost, and miniaturization, etc.

Antilock braking system (ABS) -as an example of
mechatronics systems
Main function:
Prevent Lockup of

system,
consequently
prevent wheel
skidding

Where is the synergistic effect? Video

ABS prevents the wheels from locking up, thus avoiding uncontrolled
skidding of the vehicle and decreases the distance travelled without slipping.
