Contraction – is a shortened form of a word
(or group of words) that omits certain letters
or sounds.
Apostrophe (‘)- represents the missing letters.
Ex. he’s (he is)

Formal Language: We use it when
writing essays for school, cover letters to
apply for jobs, or emails and letters at
work.

FORMAL LANGUAGE

-is less personal than informal language. It is used when


writing for professional or academic purposes like university

- Does not use colloquialisms, contractions of first person

INFORMAL LANGUAGE
- Is more casual and spontaneous. It is used when
communicating with friends or family either in writing or in
conversation.
- It is used when writing a personal emails, and text messages.
- The tone of informal language is more personal than formal
language.
