WHAT IS STIGMA?
A set of negative and often unfair beliefs that a
society or group of people have about
something.
Discrimination:

different categories of people, especially on the
grounds of race, age, sex, or disability.
IS STIGMA UNIQUE TO HIV?
Stigma is not unique to HIV/AIDS. It
has also been seen associated with TB,
syphilis and leprosy. It is seen in
diseases associated with transgression
of social norms.
LANGUAGE AND STIGMA?
Language is crucial to stigma. Powerful

stigmatization. These include HIV/AIDS as

ARIK HARTMANN

Arik Hartmann was diagnosed with HIV in 2014 at his college

campus clinic after a bout of flu-like illness. After disclosing his
HIV status to roommates, he was faced with increasing
ostracization and ultimately was asked to leave the home he had
been renting. From that moment he decided to always be open about
his HIV status and to use it open a dialogue and educate others.

ROOT CAUSE OF STIGMA
Peoples believe that the fear of transmission from
casual transmission, and the various "what if scenarios"
are the result of:
1) The lack of specific, in-depth information about HIV
transmission,
2) Fear-based public messaging, and
3) The evolving nature of knowledge about HIV and
AIDS.
