Manipulation

Brief 4
Statement of intent
This brief asks me to create a piece of art and then manipulate it using
photoshop in at least 6 different ways. Then once I have chosen my final
image, I need to present it in three different ways. The first step I plan on
taking in this project will be researching art styles I want to experiment with
and deciding if I want to go down a fine art or a photography route. Once I
have decided on a sytle and medium I will spend the rest of the first session on
this brief creating a piece of art. I then want to find a manipulation and edit my
piece using that skill. Then I will teach this method to the class and be taught
at least 5 other methods to give me further ways in which I can edit my image.
I am hoping to achieve a presentation of the different ways presenting art can
differently affect the viewer as well as conveying a message through my art.
Bastien Bastien Lecouffe Deharme was born on the shores of Brittany (France) at the beginning of the
eighties. His artwork evolves at the crossroad of modern and ancient myths and legends,
forgotten tales and tragedies. Bastien creates dark and symbolic pictures, blending a contrast of
Lecouffe beauty and decadence. (https://www.artstation.com/deharme/profile) The dark and macabre
elements of his style inspires me a lot and gives me a strong theme to bounce from when it

Deharme comes to manipulation. I plan on creating a line drawing I can manipulate inspired by Deharme's
style using the manipulations to accentuate the eerie atmosphere if the image.

I also will take inspiration from Savic's black and white illustrations.. She uses
very flowy soft and feathered lines to create a mystical, childlike but eerie
atmosphere. The eerieness of these drawings is almost comforting because of
savic the soft lines and round shapes. She uses tones in a very effective way to create
stark contrast between certain areas of the illustrations..
Pink Venom Visuals
The messaging behind this song is how something can look beautiful but still be vicious. Like 'lovely poison' (Jennie Kim).
The oxymoron of pink venom are the center of this imagery. The director of this music video is Seo Hyun-Seung. He used the
messaging of the song to create contrasting visuals of both light and dark natures. I found both the fashion and the visual
concepts very inspiring in this video and so will use the comparison of light and dark in my drawing.
Target audience
I want to go down a graphic design route and so my target audience is
going to be teens and young adults. The cartoony, dark style I want to
use lends itself to a younger audience. I also want to experiment with
presenting it in a graffiti style and this also plays into a young
demographic. Finally, another way to involve this more in my target
audience is to experiment with putting the design on clothes.
Inspired by the previous creators I

My first Outcome
sketched out this monochrome
image before tracing it digitally as
an experiment with tonal values
and variation. I pulled in the darker
aspects including taking inspiration
from the music video from the
dress and the wings and the head
inspiration from the two illustrators
I studied. I experimented with
flowing lines and soft tones in
areas to add a kind of innocence to
the drawing. I also took influence
from the contrast in the Pink
Venom by juxtaposing the cat skull
and black dress with angel wings. I
used procreate, to draw the digital
image and used the blending tool to
create a softer finish.
