Finding the Slope of a
Line given an Equation
Mathematics 8
OBJECTIVE:

Find the slope of a line given an equation; and

Rewrite an equation in the form to find the

slope
Slope of a line given an equation
How to find the slope given an equation?
Recall that if the line crosses the y-axis at the point (0. b), the b is the y-intercept.
Solve for the slope, , replace (x1 , y1) and (x2 , y2).
(0 , 𝑏 )( 𝑥 , 𝑦 )

Rewriting the Linear Equation
ax + by = c into y = mx + b and
Vice Versa
Mathematics 8
Rewriting
A linear equation can be described in a standard form
ax + by = c where a, b, and c are real numbers or in
slope intercept form y = mx + b where m and b are
also real numbers.
Standard form –> ax + by = c
Slope intercept form –> y = mx + b
Rewrite 2x + y = -6 in the y = mx + b

y = mx + b
2x + y = -6
y = -2x -6
Rewrite -4x - y = 9 in the y = mx + b

y = mx + b
-4x - y = 9
- y = 4x + 9
-1(- y = 4x + 9)-1
y = -4x - 9
Rewrite y = 3x – 5 in the form ax + by = c

ax + by = c
y = 3x - 5
-3x + y = - 5
-1(-3x + y = - 5)-1
3x – y = 5
