Spiritual Self

INTRODUCTION

•Spiritual self is one of the three

sections of the self according to
William James.
•It is the most intimate, inner
subjective part of self
INTRODUCTION
It is the most intimate version of the self
because of the satisfaction experience when
one thinks of one’s ability to argue and
discriminate, of one’s moral sensibility and
conscience, of our unconquerable will is
more pure than all other sentiments of
satisfaction. (Green, 1997).
INTRODUCTION
•The ability to use moral sensibility and
conscience may be seen through the expressions
of religion, its beliefs, and practices.
•In the same manner, cultural rituals and
ceremonies are some manifestations what
people believe in. Moreover, seeking the
meaning of life is a journey that the Spiritual Self
is on.
RELIGION

•Rebecca Stein (Stein 2011) works

on the definition of religion “as a set
of cultural beliefs and practices that
usually includes some or all of basic
characteristics.
THESE CHARACTERISTICS ARE:

1. a belief in anthropomorphic
supernatural being, such as spirit and
gods.
2. a focus of the sacred supernatural,
where sacred refers to a feeling or
reverence and awe
3. the performance of ritual activities that involves
the manipulation of sacred object to communicate
to supernatural beings and/or to influence or
control events;
4.the articulation of worldview and moral codes
through narratives and other means; and;
5.Provide the creation and maintenance of social
bonds and mechanism of social control within a
community; provides explanation for unknown and
a sense of control for individuals.
•An individual lives in a society
wherethere are many practice of
religion. The choice of religious belief
lies within the Spiritual Self. Although
the choice may be influenced by the
society and its culture.
What is Spiritual Self?

Spiritual is defined as relating

affecting the human spirit or
soul as opposed to material or
physical things.
Example of spiritual self
1. Meditation- Spiritual meditation is an experience that takes you to
the depths of who you are. You, as your real self, stripped of all the
perceptions you had about yourself until that point in your life. In the
process, you experience joy and peace.
Example of spiritual self
2. Yoga- practice may improve various aspects of spiritual well-being
and spiritual intelligence. Yoga practice may also be associated with
increased levels of spiritual health, a more positive outlook on life,
happiness within, and lower levels of existential anxieties.

3.Be in nature- Your Spiritual Self is you in your most beautiful and
powerful form. It is the authentic self, the unconditioned part, the you
without patterns. This is personal for each of us, so no need to get
caught up on the language.
Example of spiritual self
4.Dicate time for self-reflection - Making time to reflect weekly helps you live
more intentionally. It helps you understand if you're still running in the right
direction or why you are even moving in that particular direction. Reflection gives
you the opportunity to listen to your inner voice. The voice that knows what you
really want.
Spiritual Self-Reflection

Self-reflection is a powerful tool

for you to grow and encounter
God in the inner workings of
your heart. It may not come
naturally to those living in the
modern world, but it is a
spiritual practice that can
powerfully deepen your
relationship with God.
