WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• Research is a systematic inquiry that attempts to provide solutions
to existing problems and questions using facts and data, and is
usually presented in a form where all methods and procedures
conducted are recorded so they can be viewed and accessed
• Research is a common term used when “looking for something”
online; this kind of research is called “personal research”, while the
research we do at schools are called “professional research”
WHY IS RESEARCH IMPORTANT?
• There are several various form of research:
- Original research (primary source)
- Scientific research (providing explanations)
- Humanities research (historical/sociological)
- Artistic research (practice-based)
,but they all have the same purpose—to discover new information,
interpret existing facts, revise accepting knowledge, and apply
theories and laws into practice
WHAT RESEARCH SKILLS ARE NEEDED
• Check your sources – evaluate the information gathered from your
sources, ex: is it relevant?, is it too in-depth/shallow?, was the
person who wrote the content an expert?
• Ask good questions – ask specific questions when conducting a
research; giving proper context will give you better results
• Go beyond the surface – expand your sources, don’t stick to one
source
• Be patient – you might not find the exact answer to your inquiry, so
you can provide your own conclusion using the data gathered
