Introduction to The Reading Strategies
Intensive Reading with Multiple Choices
When you have a text with multiple choice questions, you need to read the text
carefully to understand not only the meaning, but also all the details, and you
may be required to deduce the answer from the context.
Here are some tips you could follow:

As the text comes first, read it first intensively. Re-read it if necessary and guess
the meanings of any difficult words.

Read each question without looking at the alternaives A-D, then look back at the
text, and work out the answer yourself according to the text

Next read the alternaives A-D the choose the one which is closest to your answer.

Eliminate the altrnatives that are obviously wrong, and watch out for distractors.
Check that you are really answering questions, and that your chosen
answer is stated or implied in the text.

Try reading between the lines by thinking by thinking about the


writer’s feelings and situation.

In today’s lecture we will using both tips we have seen earlier in
reading between the lines and intensive reading with mulitiple choices.
