WHAT IS IT

Analyzing Arguments

https://www.smekenseducation.com/evaluate-4-factors-in-argument-0/
WHAT IS IT

When you "Analyze an Argument" you evaluate

someone else's argument. The task presents a
brief passage in which the author makes a case
for a course of action or interprets events by
presenting claims and supporting evidence.

https://www.smekenseducation.com/evaluate-4-factors-in-argument-0/
WHAT IS IT

How do you analyze an argument?

WHAT IS IT

1. Briefly note the main assertion or

claim (what does the writer want me to
believe or do?)
WHAT IS IT

In the standards, this is stated as identify,

explain, or trace the reasons the author
provides in his argument. Consider if they
are logical. Do they make sense?
WHAT IS IT
WHAT IS IT

2. Make a note of the first reason the

author makes to support his/her
conclusion.
WHAT IS IT

Each reason should be backed up with

proof. Determine if there is sufficient
evidence to support each reason.
WHAT IS IT

Consider the quantity and the quality

of the evidences or proof.
WHAT IS IT

3. Write down every other reason.

WHAT IS IT

Evaluate the author’s tone and language

when referencing the viewpoint. Well-
written arguments are respectful to all
sides– not biased, stereotypical, sarcastic,
or derogatory.
WHAT IS IT

4. Underline the most important

reason.
WHAT IS IT

Look outside the argument itself. Read all

provided information about the author’s
background and credentials. What
experiences or expertise qualifies this
author as an authority on this topic?
WHAT IS IT

Such information can make someone’s

argument more–or less–credible.

Presenting Arguments

https://www.smekenseducation.com/evaluate-4-factors-in-argument-0/
WHAT IS IT

An argument aims to persuade people to accept

your conclusion because you have given them
convincing reasons to agree with you, whether
they are reading what you have written or
listening to you speak.
