    A volcanic eruption occurs when lava and gas are released from a volcano, sometimes explosively. Volcanoes erupt due to hot molten rock called magma deep below the Earth's surface. There are different types of volcanic eruptions that vary in explosiveness such as Plinian eruptions which produce tall ash columns that spread out like an umbrella, and Hawaiian eruptions which involve lava fountains that generate fast moving lava flows. The document then discusses lightning, describing it as a natural electrostatic discharge between charged regions in the atmosphere or between the atmosphere and ground.     WHAT IS LIGHTNING?
    A naturally occurring
    electrostatic discharge during
    which two electrically charged
    regions, both in the atmosphere
    or with one on the ground.
    WHY DOES LIGHTNING OCCUR?

    •Lightning happens when the


    negative charges (electrons) in the
    bottom of the cloud are attracted
    to the positive charges (protons) in
    the ground.

    TYPES OF
    LIGHTNING
    Cloud-to-ground CLOUD TO GROUND
    (CG) lightning
     comes from the
    sky down,
    but the part
    you see comes
    from the ground
    up
    Cloud to cloud
    Lightning can also
    CLOUD TO CLOUD
    travel from one cloud
    to another, or cloud-
    to-cloud (CC). Spider
    lightning refers to
    long, horizontally
    traveling flashes often
    seen on the underside
    of stratiform clouds. 
    Cloud to Air CLOUD TO AIR
    Lightning that
    occurs when the air
    around a positively
    charged cloud top
    reaches out to the
    negatively charged
    air around it.
