Undergraduate Thesis Title

Isolasi dan Karakterisasi Fraksi Etil

Asetat Dari Akar Bajakah Merah
(Uncaria nervosa Elmer)
Research Background
Indonesia has a variety of flora and fauna spread
troughout Indonesia. The plants found in Indonesia
are famous for their function as traditional
medicines. Bajakah (Uncaria nervosa) showed
cytotoxic, antiinflammation, antivirus, antibacterial,
antioxidant and immunostimulant activity (Maulina
et al, 2019)
Uncaria nervosa are plants with brownish-colored
stems that grow vines, and have large and strong
stem. Bajakah can usually grow more than 5 meters
and bajakah only grows in shady places with little
sun exposure (Lismana et all, 2022)

Bajakah is also known in Dayak language as roots,

and it is make bajakah not included in certain plant
species (Maulina et al, 2019)
Research Background

Plant classification

Kingdom : Plantae
Phylum : Tracheophyta
Class : Magnoliopsida
Order : Gentianales
Family : Rubiaceae
Genus : Uncaria
Species : Uncaria nervosa Elmer
Research Background
Isolation is a technique of separating compounds
contained in a natural material which are usually
secondary metabolites. Isolation consists of several stages
starting from the extraction process, fractionation, then
purification and identification.

Ethyl acetate is a solvent with semi-polar properties so

that it can attract polar and non-polar compounds, has
low toxicity, and is easily evaporated (Amelia and
Ngazizah, 2021). According to Harborne (1987) in Gazali
(2019) compound alkaloids, phenolics, and steroids can
be soluble in semi-polar solvents (ethyl acetate).
Therefore, a semi-polar solvent (ethyl acetate) is used in
order to attracts both polar and non-polar compounds
Formulation of the problem
1. How much is the yield of Uncaria nervosa ?

2. What secondary metabolites group are contained in ethyl acetate

fraction of Uncaria nervosa ?

3. What are the characteristics of the isolate compound of Uncaria

nervosa ?

4. What is the structure of the chemical compound from Uncaria

nervosa ?
