Fishing Net:

Fishing is one of the most common form of fishing in Bangladesh.

Fishing net is a large piece of open meshed material used for catching
fish. Nets are devices made from fibers woven in a grid like structure.
About 116 types are available.
Commonly used fishing nets in Bangladesh-

Trawl net
Seine net Cast net

Gill net Drag net

Trammel net Bag net

Lift net Barrier net

Trawl Net
Trawl nets are designed to skim over the bottom and as they cover a
large area, they have a good chance of collecting widely dispersed
species.
Structures:
• Cone shaped nets which is enclosed by a bag or coded
• Horizontal opening is maintain by beam and otter boards
• Normally demersal fishes are caught by this net
Types:
Beam trawls

Bottom otter
Bottom trawls

Seine net
Commonly known as ber jal in Bangladesh.

Rectangular in shape

Contain floats and sinkers, natural or artificial yarn are used

 Jagat jal, Cheli jal, Choto ber jal, Gulti jal, Dhop jal etc. are some
of the types of seine net

All kinds of fish usually are caught with this net

Trammel net
• Similar to gill net but are made up of three layers of netting
• The inner layer’s mesh size are smaller than two outer layers mesh
size
• This net are set vertically on the bottom to catch demersal species
• A huge amount of fish can be captured
• This net is a major cause for “ghost fishing”

Dip/lift net:
Comparatively small in size, rectangular or triangular in shape
Hand lift net, boat lift net and set lift nets are different types of Dip or
Lift net.
Dharma jal, Khara jal, Tar jal, Chai jal, Chhotki jal are examples of
this net.
Small pelagic species and fishes are caught with this net.

Barrier net

 This type of net is larger in length may be 1600-

2000 m and width may be 3-4 m
Rectangular in shape
Mesh size is larger at upper portion (4-5 cm) than
lower portion (1-2 cm)

Gill Net
A gill net is a wall of netting that hangs in the water column, typically
made of monofilament or multifilament nylon.

 Structure & Materials:

 Rectangular in shape
 Mesh size depends on fish species
 Keep it vertical position with the water
 Floats attached with head rope and sinker attached with the bottom rope
 44 types are found in BD
 Local name Fansh Jal
Types of Gill Net
On the basis of operation-

Set Gill Net

Drift Gill Net
Encircling Gill Net

Target Species
•Ilish
•Punti
•Tengra
•Salmon
•Tuna
Cast Net

Cast net also called a throw net, is a net for fishing.

Structure & Materials

 Conical in shaped, and round shape when it throw.
Length ((9-18)m and diameter of the mouth (6-12)m
Mesh size (2-10)m
A hauling string at its apex
Operation Technique
Operated manually
Spreads like umbrella over a school area of water
Used mainly in shallows of ponds or from boat or river bank

Target Fishes-
• Most target species are sardines, scads, shrimps, tilapia
• Schooling of small fishes
Environmental Effect
Heavy weights to keep on the seabed, result in a larger
amount of both habitat destruction and by catch
Non treated fish can be easily release
Drag or Push Net
Drag nets are a simple way to catch fish and require few tools as well as
some common sense in practice.

Structure & Operation Technique:

Rectangular or triangular in shape
Locally called Thela jal and Moiya Jal
Bamboo form present
Mesh size (4-9)cm
Operated in water surface
Commonly use in rural areas rivers and floodplains
Bag Net
A bag net has a long vertical wall of netting, often hundred meters long.

Structure & Operation Techniques:

Rounded, rectangular or conical in shape
Size of the nets varied from place to place and mode for operation
Keep vertically open by a frame and horizontally stretched by water current
No pocket present
