Late Adolescence and

Adult Career
Development
What is the Nature of
Adolescence?
 Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and
adulthood. Children who are entering adolescence are going
trough many changes such as Physical changes, Intellectual
Changes, Personality change and Social developmental.
Genetic/Biological and Environmental/social factors influence
adolescence development.
Late Adolescence
 Late Adolescence occurs between the ages of 18-24 years old.
Firmer sense of Identity, Developed bodies, Brain changes,
Invincible complex are the changes that can be seen during this
years. (Allen & Waterman, 2019)

 Late Adolescence is also a period of development as an

individuals encounter many environmental changes such as
moving away from home, transitioning from education to
employment and start building a family.
Development during Late
Adolescence
 Physical Development
 Intellectual Development
 Relationship Development
Physical Development
 Late Adolescence generally have completed physical
development and grown their full adult heights. Teens entering
early adulthood have a stronger sense of their individuality now
and can identify their own values. They are more focus about their
future and base decisions on their hope and ideals. They become
more emotionally and physically separated from their family
(Brittany & Waterman 2022).
Cognitive Development
 Wisdom is expert knowledge about the practical aspects of life
that permits excellent judgment about important matters.
According to the study the time frame of late adolescence and
early adulthood is the main window for wisdom to emerge,
factors other than age are critical for wisdom to develop, and
personality-related factors are better predictors of wisdom than
cognitive factors such as intelligence. (Staudinger et al., 2011)
Relationship Development
 Affection Phase. In late adolescence, the focus is on the
relationship rather than on self-concept or peer status. Romantic
relationships become more personal and caring; they are set in the
context of a small, mixed-sex clique rather than in the context of
the larger crowd, with friends providing advice and emotional
support. (Brown, Feiring, and Furman 1999)
Adult Career Development
 Emerging early adulthood, which occurs at approximately 18 to
24 years of age, is characterized by experimentation and
exploration. Thinking becomes more pragmatic and reflective in
early adulthood than it was in adolescence. Career development is
an important aspect of early adulthood, and work becomes a more
central aspect of most young adults lives.

 The late-maturing boys had more time to explore life’s options, or

because the early-maturing boys continued to focus on their
advantageous physical status instead of on career development
and achievement. More recent research confirms, though, that at
least during adolescence it is advantageous to be an early-
maturing rather than a late-maturing boy (Graber, Brook, &
Warren, 2006).
 According to Damon (2008). Purpose is a missing ingredient in
many adolescents and emerging adults achievement and career
development. Too many youth drift and aimlessly go through
their high school and college years. Damon says, engaging in
behavior that places them at risk for not fulfilling their potential
and not finding a life pursuit that energizes them.
