WORK DONE DURING SWEP II
During the course of my SWEP II, I carried out the
following major operations.
• Troubleshooting
• Repair and Maintenance
TROUBLESHOOTING
• Troubleshooting is a systematic process used to locate
the cause of a fault in a computer system and correct
the relevant hardware and software issues.
• Approaching problem solving using a logical and
methodical approach is essential to successful
resolution.
Troubleshooting Process
The troubleshooting process steps are as follows:
Step 1. Identify the problem.
Step 2. Establish a theory of probable cause.
Step 3. Test the theory to determine the cause.
Step 4. Establish a plan of action to resolve the problem and implement the
solution.
Step 5. Verify full system functionality and, if applicable, implement preventive
measures.
• Step 6. Document findings, actions, and outcomes.
Data Backup
• A data backup is a copy of the data on a computer hard drive that is
saved to another storage device or to cloud storage.
• Cloud storage is online storage that is accessed via the Internet. In an
organization, backups may be performed on a daily, weekly, or
monthly basis.
• Data Backup is extremely important and must be carried out before
troubleshooting can begin. This is because during the course of
administering solution to the problem detected, data and other
important information for the user can be lost permanently
Preventive measures to verify full
functionality
• Reboot the computer.
• Ensure that multiple applications work properly.
• Verify network and Internet connections.
• Print a document from one application.
• Ensure that all attached devices work properly.
• Ensure that no error messages are received.
• Verifying full system functionality confirms that
REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE
• Computer repair is the process of identifying, troubleshooting and
resolving problems and issues in a faulty computer.
• Computer repair is a broad field encompassing many tools, techniques
and procedures used to repair computer hardware, software or
network/Internet problems.
• Typically, a hardware fault requires the physical review of a computer
and testing for abnormalities
• Software-based computer repair issues are generally related to
operating system (OS) configuration or updates, installed applications,
viruses and other software services.
Safety Rules
• Take off any metal objects on your arms or fingers such as bracelets, rings or watches.
Even if your unit is unplugged, there may still be some remaining electric charge.
• Make sure your hands are completely dry to avoid damaging any mechanical parts as well
as to avoid electrocution.
• Work in a cool area to avoid perspiration for the same reason as seen in the previous
number.
• Before touching any part within the tower, put your hands against another metal
surface (such as the computer casing) to remove static charge, which may damage
sensitive devices.
• Prepare a place to keep any screws you may remove. A container or piece of paper
with labels for each part (casing, motherboard, CD drive, etc) is ideal to avoid confusion
between the similar-looking screws.
Equipment used during the program
• Screwdriver : This tool is used in the workshop to open hardware
components of the PC
• USB Cable: This tool is used to extract files directly from the
computer system.
• Bootable USB Flash drive: This is used to install windows onto a PC.
• Antivirus: This is a software package that protects a computer system
against attacks from viruses.
• Solid State Drive (SSD): This tool is used as an external storage
device to store files of clients that need to format their PC.
Equipment used
HARD DRIVES

Problem: The computer does not boot properly.

• Possible cause/solution: This problem can arise as a result of the hard
disk not being accessed by the system. The system can be booted with
a startup disk and if the problem is not solved, it should be ensured
that the hard disk is properly connected and detected. Check if the
ribbon cable is bad or poorly connected. Also, check the jumper
setting (for a master/slave configuration).
MOUSE

• Problem: The mouse pointer does not move on the smoothly

• Possible cause/solution: Check to see if the roller is dirty and clean it
thoroughly.
MONITOR

Problem: Screen elements replicated all over the screen.

• Possible Cause/solution: This is due to irregular or improper video.
Resolution setting (which is common with old video cards) adjusts the
resolution from the video control panel
Works done during my placement
• CPU Servicing
• Laptop Troubleshooting
• Keyboard Replacement
• Motherboard replacement
• Screen replacement
