Point of View
• The poem is written in 1st person narrative.
• The poem takes place in the mind of the speaker, as he reflects on the
island home where most of his childhood was spent.
• He is unabashedly unbiased in his feelings for his island and is intent on
showcasing his love and respect for the sea.
Effectiveness of P.O.V.
• The 1st person narration gives the reader a chance to understand the
persona’s experience first hand, such as his love for this home and how he
remembers it.
• It also gives the poem creditability.
• It builds rapport with readers by sharing a personal story directly with
them.
Effectiveness of P.O.V. contd.
• The narration brings a sense of nostalgia, which is almost mournful as it
depicts feelings of longing and dissatisfaction. Throughout the poem, the
persona reflects on his homeland which he longs to return to .In stanza 5,
line 25 there is a mood of cheerfulness and upbeat moods as the persona
returns home.
