Background of the Book
1.) The book was written on board at one of the
ships that was first to circumnavigate the world
during an expedition that was lead by the Portuguese
explorer, Ferdinand Magellan and after his death
during the voyage by Juan Sebastián Elcano
approximately last 1523–1524 .

2.) Pigafetta kept a detailed journal, the original of which is lost.


3.) It survives in four (4) manuscript versions: one in Italian and three in
French.
Content of the Book
4.) In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships
to find a western route to the Moluccas. Battling storms, mutinies,
and the unknown, Magellan died before reaching his destination.
One ship ultimately returned to Spain after circumnavigating the
world.

5.) On September 8, 1522, the crew of the


Victoria cast anchor in the waters off of
Seville, Spain. On board was Antonio
Pigafetta, having just completed the first
circumnavigation of the world.
6.) The Magellan Route is the
trail of the First Voyage Around
the World. The rest of the fleet
was gone: the Santiago was
shipwrecked, the San Antonio
was overtaken, the Conception
was burned and the Trinidad was
abandoned. Magellan was dead.
Among 237 sailors who departed
from Seville, only 18 returned
on the Victoria.

•The first Mass in the Philippines was held in


Mazaua (Limasawa) on March 31, 1521 by
Father Pedro de Valderrama.

•A Mass was held on the shore of Cebu on


April 15, 1521. On the same day, 800 Filipinos
were converted to Christianity.
•Magellan and his men called the island of Humuna (now
Homonhon) as Acquada da li buoni Segnialli (“The
Watering-place of Good Signs”)
•Lapu-Lapu did not want to pay Magellan and his men the
goat that they have promised.
•Datu Zula requested the captain to defeat Lapu-Lapu.

•Magellan orders an attack but miscalculates.

•Ferdinand Magellan died on April 28, 1521.


9.) Reasons Why it is a Primary Source of the
Philippines
• The book of The First Voyage Around the World by Antonio
Pigafetta is remarkably accurate ethnographic and
geographical account of the first circumnavigation of the
World.

• It is the English translation of his journal that was written on


the voyage, 1519-1521.
• Pigafetta served as the eye-witness to the happening in the
expedition.
