Johnson and Christensen (2008) qualitative research as research relying primarily of the
collection of qualitative data (non-numerical data, such as words and pictures) and relying
on the inductive mode of the scientific method and exploration or discovery; this is an open-
ended way.

Johnson and Christensen (2008) proposed that there are four most important types of
qualitative research, they are: phenomenology, ethnography, case study and grounded theory.

Sorensen, Razavieh (2010)).
Richard (2003) added the types are: concepts of case study, life history, and action research
and conversation analysis. Meriam and Tisdel (2016) added the types are: narrative inquiry
and qualitative case study. Creswell (2012) focused only on grounded theory research,
ethnographic research and narrative research, and Ary, Jacob, Sorensen, Razavieh (2010)
add the types are: basic interpretative studies, document or content analysis, historical
research and narrative inquiry.

The grounded theory goes beyond description to generate or discover a theory, and or the
grounded theorists proceed through systematic procedures in forming a theory that explains the
process.
A grounded theory design is a systematic, qualitative procedure used to set of procedures used to
generate systematically a theory that explains, at a broad conceptual level, a process about a
substantive topic. You use grounded theory when you seek to generate a theory because one is
not available or suitable. It is also useful to study a process, an action, or an interaction.
Grounded theory (GT) is a research method concerned with the generation of theory, which is
‘grounded’ in data that has been systematically collected and analysed.
It offers a step by-step, systematic procedure for the beginning researcher. In using grounded
theory, a researcher can stay close to the data at all times in the analysis.

The result of this type of qualitative study is a theory that emerges from, or is
“grounded” in, the data, hence, grounded theory.
The grounded theory, as it was introduced in 1967 by sociologists Glaser and Strauss
in their book The Discovery of Grounded Theory. at the University of California San
Francisco.

The researcher bases categories on all data collected, such as interviews,
observations, and researcher’s memos or notes. Typically, researchers identify categories
and subcategories, as is seen in the grounded theory study by Knapp (1995).
axial coding
the grounded theorist selects one open coding category, positions it at the center of
the process being explored (as the core phenomenon), and then relates other categories
to it.
selective coding
the grounded theorist writes a theory from the interrelationship of the categories in
the axial coding model.
