PSYCHOSOCIAL STAGES OF
DEVELOPMENT

This theory was impacted by


psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud's work.
In each stage people experience a conflict.
An individual is shaped by and react to
their environment.
THE 8 STAGES OF PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Stage 1. Trust vs. Mistrust
(Infancy: birth to 18 months)


Stage 1. Trust vs. Mistrust

The most fundamental stage in life.

Children develop a sense of trust when


caregivers provide reliability, care, affection.

around me?"

Basic Virtue: Hope

Doubt
(Toddler: 18 months to 3 years)

independence.
Perform basic actions.
Make simple decisions.

(Preschool: 3 to 5 years)

Children began to assert their power and


control over the world, through playing and
social interaction.
A healthy balance of initiative and guilt is
important.

(School Age: 6 to 12 years)

Children begin to develop a sense of pride


in their accomplishments and abilities.
Children need to cope with new social
academic demands.

(Adolescence: 12 to 18 years)

development.

(Young Adult: 18 to 40 years)

loving relationship.
Success leads to strong relationships.
This stage covers the period of early
adulthood.
