IC ENGINES

IC ENGINES
An internal combustion engine is classified as a heat engine. It’s called
internal because the combustion of the air-fuel mixture occurs inside the
engine, in a combustion chamber, and some of the burned gases are part
of the new combustion cycle.

• Basically, an internal combustion engine transforms the thermal

energy of the burning air-fuel mixture into mechanical energy.
TYPES OF IC ENGINES
• Based on ignition: 1. Spark ignition 2. Compression ingnition

• Based on fuel types classified as petrol engine, diesel engine, gas

engine

• Based on stroke classified as 2 stroke engine and 4 stroke engine

SPARK IGNITION

• Spark-ignition means relating to a gasoline-fueled engine or any other

type of engine with a spark plug (or other sparking device) and with
operating characteristics significantly similar to the theoretical Otto
combustion cycle. Spark-ignition engines usually use a throttle to
regulate intake air flow to control power during normal operation.
COMPRESSION IGNITION
• In compression ignition engines, only air is inducted into engine and
then compressed.

• Then the fuel injector sprays the fuel into the hot compressed air at a
suitable measured rate causing it to ignite
Compression ignition
TWO STROKE ENGINE
• A two-stroke (or two-stroke cycle) engine is a type of internal
combustion engine that completes a power cycle with two strokes (up
and down movements) of the piston during one power cycle, this
power cycle being completed in one revolution of the crankshaft.

• In a two-stroke engine, the end of the combustion stroke and the

beginning of the compression stroke happen simultaneously, with the
intake and exhaust (or scavenging) functions occurring at the same
time.

FOUR STROKE ENGINE
• A four-stroke (also four-cycle) engine is an internal combustion (IC)
engine in which the piston completes four separate strokes while
turning the crankshaft. A stroke refers to the full travel of the piston
along the cylinder, in either direction.

• The four strokes are intake, comession, combustion and exhaust.
