About the Internship

The Global Academic Internship Programme (GAIP ) with the National University of Singapore
(NUS ) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE ) gives a holistic experience at the NUS campus.
In this internship I learnt the concepts of Data Analytics using Machine Learning and Deep Learning
and completed a research project based on our learnings within the stipulated time. My team and I
came up with a project called "Fashion Designing using NST and GAN models".
Project

In this project, we propose an idea for a new fashion design framework, a system that can extrapolate the
style of designs and artworks to existing shirts/tops. As a result, we generate new ideas and designs for
shirts/tops. The model is then assessed by examining the generated visuals of clothing and how well they
match the user's fashion preferences. For building this project we used various machine learning and
deep learning concepts such as computer vision, image segmentation, neural style transfer and GAN.
Finally, we presented our project in front of the NUS and HPE faculties and were evaluated based on our
proposal of idea and presentation.
FLOW CHART OF OUR MODEL
1. Approach of the project

In our project we apply the neural style transfer algorithm to fashion so as to synthesise new custom
clothes.

- We construct an approach to personalise and generate new custom clothes based on a users
preference and by learning the users fashion choices from a limited set of clothes from their
closet.
- Also, we evaluate the model by analysing the generated images of clothes and how well they
align with the user's fashion style.
2. Technologies Used : 3. Concepts covered :

We have used the following technology to We have covered the following concepts in our
build our model: model which we have build :

- OpenCV - Image segmentation

- Python - Computer Vision
- Keras - GAN ( Generative Adversarial
- TensorFlow Network )
- Google Colaboratory - NST ( Neutral Style Transfer )
- Anaconda Navigator
4. What did we build ?

- The users select a clothing image as a content image and an art/pattern as a style image that they
appreciate.
- Then we generate a unique clothing design using deep learning algorithms, combining the content
and style images.
- To achieve perfect content picture preservation, we also employ the GrabCut algorithm to construct
a third image that is an outline of the content image.
- As a result, we produce new fashion concepts for users using deep learning algorithms.

6. Business Plan

- It targets one of the highest revenue generating industries ie., the Fashion industry.
- It promotes sustainable fashion and thus adopting the dark green approach of business.
- We try to explore the unexplored field of art that is yet to be touched upon Artificial
Intelligence ( AI ).
- We try to bridge the gap between brand and consumer and help the brands understand the
consumer demand.
7. Future Enhancements

- Given the simplicity of our method, we believe that there is still substantial room for
improvement.
- In future works, we plan to explore more advanced algorithms to allow more kinds of pictures,
including both realistic and artistic images, as style inputs.
- We are also planning to increase the speed of generating new images and infusing the style with
content images.
- More diverse image datasets will be used for training and testing to make the generated
clothing styles more fashionable and more impressive.
8. Conclusion of the Project

We believe that our approach is at least promising, and that more research into leveraging in creative
industries is needed. The key advantage of this model is that it can help explore more ideas for designing
garments, which is extremely effective when the designing process is bound to take longer than one
fashion cycle.

We dealt with various challenges that helped us work better under pressure and improved our problem-
solving abilities—lastly, working as a group enhanced our communication as well as our interpersonal
skills.
Conclusion

This Global Academic Internship Programme gave me an insightful journey into Data Analytics using Deep
Learning. Aided by the theoretical and practical interventions at the university, we successfully completed a
project with Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Data Analytics. Being able to
experience the stupendous campus life in Singapore was entirely fresh and holistic. The learning process
behind this month-long journey at NUS was truly rewarding!

Finally, I am grateful to VIT Chennai & Corporate Gurukul for facilitating the internship and lastly my parents
for their support and encouragement.
