MUSIC
Representative Music of
Visayas
Every song has its purpose to convey to the listeners
especially through its lyrics and melody, be it for entertainment or
rituals. As for Visayas, vocal music mirrors its culture and
tradition.
a. LOVE SONG
is a song about being in love, falling in
love, and heartbreaks upon the end of love
and the feelings that these experiences
bring. It can be found in the histories and
cultures of most societies, though their
universality is a modern phenomenon.

b. COURTSING SONG
is a song about courting or dating. It represents the
romance between two people.

c. DRINKING SONG
is a song sung during social gatherings. It may vary
from person to person and region to region in both the
lyrics and in the music.

d. FAREWELL SONG
is a song of goodbye or leaving someone.

e. LULLABY SONG
is a soothing song with which to lull a child to
sleep.

f. WORK SONG
is typically sung for two reasons: to coordinate
the labor of a group of people working together,
which improves the efficiency of the work, and to
relieve the boredom of a tedious job, which
improves the lives of the workers.

enthusiastic musical involvment of the
Visayan people but also their sentiments,
way of life, and interactions with thier
environment and other people.

RONDALL MUSIC

 a string ensemble originating from Spain played with a pick

 many Filipino musicians were able to lead the way in Rondalla
Ensemble and one of them was Juan Silos Jr., is known as
“Father of Rondalla”.
 from the Spanish ronda, meaning “serenade”
 its origin were in the folk playing bands of stringed
instruments that were played using the plectrum (pick) as
the piccolo, bandurria, laud, octavina, guitar, bajo de unas
(double bass) and often, a drum for percussion.

RONDALLA BANDURRIA
INSTRUMENT  is a 14-string instrument
with 16 frets and shorter neck

of the rondalla and usually
plays the melodic melodic

LAUD
RONDALLA
 LAUD comes from a Spanish
INSTRUMENT word which means LUTE.
 It is a plectrum-plucked

strings in pairs, similar to the

 Like the bandurria, it is tuned
in fourths, but its range is one
octave lower.

RONDALLA
 OCTAVINA has a shorter neck
INSTRUMENT compared to the guitar, with 14
strings and 16 frets.

the laud, the lower notes in
accompaniments and in
unison with bass notes.
 It serves as the alto of the
rondalla.

RONDALLA
INSTRUMENT  GUITAR is a popular musical
instrument classified as a
chordophone instrument with

 It is typically played by strumming
or plucking the strings. It plays the
rhythm or beat of the musical

Bajo de Unas
RONDALLA
 Bajo de Unas is the largest among

ensembles – evident by thick
S string, large body, and low tones.
 The number of strings varies

TULTOGAN – a bamboo
and drum ensemble used by
the natives for
communication.

- A gong, drum, wooden
percussion ensemble.
- It is used to accompany a
dance movement imitating
the fight of the hawk.
