SUBORDINATING
CONJUNCTIONS
WHAT IS A
SUBORDINATING
CONJUNCTION?
A subordinating conjunction is a word or
phrase that links a dependent clause to an
independent clause. This word or phrase
indicates that a clause has an informative
value to add to the sentence's main idea,
signaling a cause-and-effect relationship or a
shift in time and place between the two
clauses.
TYPES OF CLAUSES

IF WHILE
EXAMPLES
IF
“If” is a very useful word. It signifies
conditionality: things that might
happen and the condition(s) on
which they might happen. “If” is a
subordinating conjunction that
allows people to link their ideas. It is
a word used frequently in
negotiations, planning activities,
stories, and instructions.
EXAMPLES OF THE SUBORDINATING
CONJUNCTION “IF”

We can go to the park if you clean

your room.

If you find out where my dog is

please let me know.
SINCE
We use Since as a preposition,
conjunction, and adverb to refer to a
time, and as a conjunction to introduce
a reason. We use since as a
subordinating conjunction to
introduce a subordinate clause. We
use it to give a reason for something.
UNLESS
Unless means 'except if.
We use unless to say that there may
be an exception and that this
exception will change the situation.
Example: We're playing tennis
tomorrow unless it rains.
UNTIL
'Until' is used to indicate whether
another event will take place until
an event occurs. The sentence after
the word 'Until' is the sentence that
expresses the process and takes the
suffix to 'until’.
EXAMPLE. Jessica wait for you here
until you get back.
WHILE
We usually use “while” when we have two
continuous actions taking place at the same
time. The key is the word “continuous.”
The following are examples of using while
for continuous actions
EXAMPLE: I am preparing this document
now in my office, while my cat is licking
her paws beside me.
