(UVR)
ULTRA VIOLET
RADIATION 1

-is a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelength from 10 nm to 400 nm, shorter than that of visible light,
but longer than x-rays.

Ultraviolet radiation lies just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum. Ultraviolet waves have shorter
wavelengths than the visible light and carry more energy.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of non-ionizing radiation that is emitted by the sun and artificial sources,
such as tanning beds. While it has some benefits for people, including the creation of Vitamin D, it also can cause
health risks. Our natural source of UV radiation: The sun.It has also a Sunburn is a sign of short-term
overexposure, while premature aging and skin cancer are side effects of prolonged UV exposure. UV exposure
increases the risk of potentially blinding eye diseases, if eye protection is not used. Overexposure to UV radiation
can lead to serious health issues like erythema, sunburn, photodamage (photoaging), photocarcinogenesis,
damage to the eyes, alteration of the immune system of the skin, and chemical hypersensitivity. including cancer.
ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION
IS CLASSIFIED INTO 3
1. ULTRAVIOLET A
(UVA)

2. ULTRAVIOLET B
(UVB)

3. ULTRAVIOLET C
(UVC)
ULTRAVIOLET A

while slightly less intense than UVB, penetrate your skin more deeply. Exposure causes genetic
damage to cells on the innermost part of your top layer of skin, where most skin cancers occur.

Helps moods – Research suggests that sunlight stimulates the pineal gland in the brain to produce
certain chemicals called ‘tryptamines’. These chemicals improve our mood.

damages your skin, resulting in a tan. It is the primary radiation used in tanning beds. It causes
almost all forms of skin aging, including wrinkles. UVA damages the collagen and elastin in the skin
and also generates free radicals
ULTRAVIOLET B
(UVB)
ULTRAVIOLET B
(UVB)
has a shorter wavelength. It is associated with skin burning.

UVB radiation causes sunburn, darkening and thickening of the

outer layer of the skin, and melanoma and other types of skin
cancer. It may also cause problems with the eyes and the
immune system.

UVB-induced, delayed tanning (increases melanin in skin after

several days), acts as a sunscreen. Several human skin diseases,
like psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis and localized
scleroderma, can be treated with solar radiation (heliotherapy) or
artificial UV radiation (phototherapy).
ULTRAVIOLET C
(UVC)
ULTRAVIOLET C
(UVC)
measured by its light wavelengths (measured in nanometres). UV light, which
encompasses three subbands, UV-C, UV-B, and UV-A, measures the lower or
shorter wavelength spectrum.

UVC radiation can cause severe burns of the skin and eye injuries
(photokeratitis). Avoid direct skin exposure to UVC radiation and never look
directly into a UVC light source, even briefly. Skin burns and eye injuries from
UVC exposure usually resolve within a week with no known long-term damage

UVC GOOD EFFECTS. It can be used to disinfect surfaces, air, and liquids.
UVC light kills germs like viruses and bacteria through damaging molecules
UVA,UVB,UVC
DIFFERENCE&SIMILARITIES
UVA rays have the longest
wavelengths, followed by UVB, and
UVC rays which have the shortest
wavelengths. While UVA and UVB
rays are transmitted through the
atmosphere, all UVC and some UVB
rays are absorbed by the Earth's
ozone layer.

UVA, UVB, UVC- all of these are

forms of ultraviolet light rays that are
naturally occurring.
