Application Layer

Tutorial 23
Application Layer
 The application layer sits at Layer
7, the top of the Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI)
communications model.

 It ensures an application can

effectively communicate with
other applications on different
computer systems and networks
Application Layer
Application layer is the layer that found most protocols.
The common protocols in Application Layer :
 File Transfer protocol (FTP)
 Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP)
 Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
 Line Printer Protocol (LDP)
 Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
File Transfer Protocol
• In short Term FTP.
• FTP is the protocol used to transfer large files b/w devices.
• FTP used two port numbers
20 for connection
21 for data
• FTP perform application like
Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP)
• In short tem TFTP.
• TFTP is the protocol  used transferring short configuration files to
routers and other devices.
• TFTP its port number is 69.
• TFTP perform application like :
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
• In short tem HTTP.
• HTTP used for visiting the websites and transmitting hypermedia
documents, such as HTML.
• HTPP port number 80.
• HTTP operate application like
Line Printer Protocol (LDP)
• In short term LDP.
• LDP allows computers and printers to work with each other in a
network.
• LDP port number 515
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
• In short term DHCP.
• DHCP used for distribute the IP address of the network devices in LAN.
• DHCP uses two port number :
• 67 (server to client)
• 68 (client to server)
