Poles
– the values of the Laplace Transform variable s that cause transfer function to
become infinite.
-any roots of the denominator of the transfer function that are common to the
roots of the numerator.

Zeros
- the values of the Laplace Transform variable s that cause transfer function to
become zero.
-any roots of the numerator of the transfer function that are common to the roots of
the denominator.
 
 

 
 
Note: although we have obtained whole numbers here in the example, it
is possible to have real and imaginary numbers as poles and zeros of the
transfer function.
The s-plane
- This is a plane that shows the position of the zeros and poles. It
has the x – axis for the real numbers and the y- axis for the
imaginary number. To represent a zero on the s-plane a small
circle is placed on its position and an x is placed to represent
the position of the poles.
Example 2:
From what we have obtained from Example 1
s= -4,-6 are the zeros of the transfer function
s = -1, -7, -8, -10 are the poles of the transfer function
