C.

V RAMAN
Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman won the Noble prize for
physics in 1930 for his pioneering Work on scattering of
light. He was the first Asian and first won non white to
receive any Noble prize in Sciences.Raman also worked
on acoustic of musical instruments. He was the first to
investigate the harmonic nature of the sound of Indian
drums Such as the tabla and the mridangam .
BIOGRAPHY OF C.V RAMAN

• C.V Raman was born on 7 November ,1888 in a brahmin

family in Triuchirappali, Tamil Nadu. His father name was
Chandrasekhara Ramanathan Iyer His mother’s name was
Prawathi Ammel .C.V Raman was a intelligent and brilliant
student since his early childhood. At the age of 11 he passed

scholarship. In 1907 he married Lokasundari Ammel and had
two son namely Chandrashekhar and Radhakrishnan.
INVENTIONS
• He discovered that when light traverses a
transparent material, some of the deflected
light changes wavelength and amplitude. This
phenomenon was a new type of scattering of
light and was subsequently termed as the
Raman effect (Raman Scattering ).
• In October 1970,he collapsed in his
laboratory. He was moved to a hospital and
the doctors gave him four hours to live.He
survived and after a few days refused to stay
in the hospital as he preferred to die in the
gardens of his institute (the Raman Research
Institute in Bangalore) surrounded by his
flowers. He died of natural causes on 21
November 1970 at the age of 82.
•Before dying, Raman told his Students,

So not allow thethe journal of the Academy

to die ,for they are the sensitive indicators of
the quality of Science being done in the
country and whether Science is taking root in
it or not.
