INVERSE
FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVES:
1. Define one –to – one functions
2. Define inverse function
3. Represent real-life situation using one –to-
one functions
4. Determine the inverse of a one-to-one
function
5. Represent real-life situation using inverse
functions

Key Question:

How are the concepts of functions

be applied in solving real-life
problems?
1. Describe the picture at the
above. Invert or turn the
picture upside down.
2. What have you observed?
3. What comes into your
mind when you hear the word
inverse?
4. Use the word inverse in a
sentence.
5. Give examples of
operations, things, or
situations that are inverses of
one another.
 One-to-One Functions
A function is one-to-one if and only if
each element of the domain is paired with
a unique element of the range and each
element of the range is paired with a
unique element of the domain.
A one-to-one function is a function in
which for each value of y in the range
there is just one value of in the domain of
such that .

In other words, f is one-to-one if implies
If a function is one-to-one, it has an
inverse and its inverse is also a function.
Definition
Inverse function
If is a one-to-one function, then its inverse of
denoted by is the function formed by
reversing all the ordered pairs in f. Thus,
Properties of an Inverse Function
If the function exists,
is a one-to-one function;
is also one-to-one.
Domain of= Range of
Range of = Domain of f
Example 1
Find the inverse of the function described by the set
of ordered pairs { (0, -2), (1, 0), (2, 2), (3, 4 ),
(4, 6) }
Solution: Switch the coordinates of each pair
{ (0, -2), (1, 0), (2, 2), (3, 4 ), (4, 6) } Original

Function
Finding the Inverse of a Function: To find
1. Replace f(x) with y.
2. Interchange x and y.
3. Solve for y in terms of x.
4. Replace the new y with ).
5. If has an inverse function, the result can be verified by showing that
or apply the composition of functions
Example 2
