FIRST AID

BASICS
First Aid
o Is an immediate and temporary care given to a person
who suddenly gets ill or injured. It includes self-help
and home care if medical assistance is not readily
available or delayed. It can mean the difference
between life and death in extreme cases. However, we
must know the limits of the first aid we can give
because improper first aid can actually do more harm
than good in some instances.

o Anyone who gives first aid is a FIRST AIDER.


Roles of First
Aid
o It is a bridge that fills the gap between the
victim and the physician.
o It is not intended to compete with or to
take the place of the services of the
physician.
o It ends when the services of the physician
begins.
Objectives of First
Aid
o To save lives
o To prolong life
o To alleviate suffering
o To prevent further injury

o Gentle – does not cause pain and panic
o Observant – notices all signs
o Resourceful – makes the best use of things at
hand
o Tactful – does not frighten the victim
o Sympathetic – comforts and reassures the victim

If the cut is severe and you can't get your mom to a hospital right

o Rinse the cut or wound with water and apply pressure with
sterile gauze, a bandage, or a clean cloth.

on top of the first and keep applying pressure.
o Raise the injured body part to slow bleeding.
o When bleeding stops, cover the wound with a new, clean
bandage.

spread to their arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach. This pain happens because a
blockage stops blood getting to the heart muscle.

person needs medical help as soon as possible. A heart attack can be very
serious and needs immediate attention. Help the person to sit down. Ensure
they are comfortable. Reassure them while you wait for the ambulance.
