1 Linear Inequalities in
Two Variables
A. Representing situations in the form of linear
inequalities
1. There are 4 mathematical symbols used to represent
various situations in the form of inequalities.
Keywords in the situation Symbol
• Smaller than
• Less than
• Smaller than equal to
• Not more than
• At most
• maximum
• Greater than
• exceeds
• Greater than equal to
• Not less than
• At least
• minimum
For example
Situation Inequality
The value of y is less than the y
value of x.
The value of x - y is not more x–y
than 8.
The value of y is exceeds 4. y
The value of y is exceeds the y–x
value of x by at least 3.
The minimum value of x + y x + y 10
is 10.
2. In general, a linear inequality in two
variables, x and y, can written in two forms
Gradient-intercept form General form
y ax + by

y ax + by

y ax + by

y ax + by
3. To represent a situation in the
form of a linear inequality:
Identify the variables involved and use
suitable letters to represent them if
necessary.
Use the correct inequality symbol to
represent the situation in the form of a
linear inequality.
Example 2
Taufik wants to buy some revisin books and exercise books at a book
exhibition. He finds that the price of a reference book is RM 14 and the price of
an exercise book is RM 9. The maximun amount of money that Taufik can
spend is RM 100. Represent the above situation in a appropriate form of linear
inequality.
Example 3
Puan Hidayah wants to buy mathematics posters to
hang in the Mathematics Room. The cost of a small
poster is RM 12.50 and for a large poster is RM 18.50.
Represent the purchase of both posters in an appropriate
form of inequality if the allocation from the school is
RM 150.00.
Solution:
Multiply both sides of the inequality by 2 to
Let,
cancel the fractional denominator:
k = small poster and b = big poster.

Hence, 12.50k + 18.50b 150
