CoTM 2102:

Theory of Structures
Course outline
Course Rationale

 Theory of Structures is one of the series of courses

arranged in the engineering module for the B.SC
program/curriculum of CoTM.

 The course is scheduled to be taken after a student

acquires basic understanding on Structural
Mechanics and Strength of Materials with
Qualifying Status.
Course Objective

 In this course, students are expected to develop general

understanding on procedures and fundamental concepts of
Structural Analysis and Investigating Effects of Loads/Forces
on Structural System.
Generally, students after taking the course are expected to
be able to:

 Understand and explain basic structural system of

different types and identify effects of loads on structures.

 Understand some basic methods of analysis in which

they will develop general understanding on Force
Displacement Relation of structures.
Generally, students after taking the course are expected to
be able to:

Perform analysis of simple structures both statically

determinate and indeterminate to a lesser degree
such as Plane Trusses, Pin Connected Frames,
and Monolithic Rigid Frames under general
systems of force, etc.
Course Content
  1. Introduction:
• Review of Statics & Strength of Materials
• Loads on Structures

2. Deflection of Statically Determinate Structures

• Conjugate Beam method
• Virtual Work Method

3. Analysis of Statically Indeterminate Structures

• Stability and Determinacy of Structures
• Methods of Consistent Deformation
• Three Moment Equation
• Slope deflection Equation
• Moment Distribution Method
Methodology

 The methodology for conducting the course will be a combination

of Lecture, Class Exercise and Assignments. Basic ideas on

major topics are to be lectured and these ideas need to be well

elaborated with class exercise and assignments where students

get full participation at each level in the process of conducting the

course
Evaluation

 Students will be evaluated based on their efferent in the

different activities stated in the methodology together with

final or comprehensive examination as follows:

  Final Exam 60%

Quizzes and assignment 40%
