BOWEL

PREPARATION
Definition
• process of removing all feces from
the colon in order to have a medical or
surgical procedure such as a colonoscopy
Purpose
• The ultimate goal of bowel preparation is to empty and
cleanse the bowel for a diagnostic procedure
using x rays to
detect a disease process in the intestines)
•  for surgical intervention (such as colonoscopy)
PREPARATION
1  DAY  BEFORE  
What can you eat:
• Water
• Tea and black coffee without any milk, cream
• Flavored water without red or purple dye
• Clear, light colored juices such as apple, white grape, lemonade without
pulp, and white cranberry
• Clear broth including chicken, beef, or vegetable
• Soda
• Sports drinks such as Gatorade and Propel (light colors only)
• Popsicles without fruit or cream; no red or purple dye
• Jello-O or other gelatin without fruit; no red or purple dye
• Boost Breeze Tropical Juice drink
Day Of Procedure
• Drink only clear liquids. Do not eat any solid food or milk products
until your test is done.
• You may need to get to the toilet right away. You will have many
bowel movements through the day. They will become very watery.
The bowels are clear or clean when there is only pale yellow fluid
without flecks of stool.
• You may have to take a laxative or an enema the night before the
colonoscopy if the bowel is not all clean out.
SIDE EFFECTS
• Dehydration
• Diarrhea
• Bloating
• Nausea
• Cramps
• The  stool  coming  out  should  be  clear  liquid  and  without
 particles.
• You  know  you’re  done  when   the  stool  coming  out  is  yellow,
 light, liquid,and clear
EXPLANATION FOR COLONOSCOPY PROCEDURE
• Explain about medication
• Usage : Fortran –used for bowel clearance
• Dosage: 3 dose : 1st dose at 1900h, 2nd dose at
Admission 2100h, 3rd dose at 0400h – informed doctor if
patient not passing motion after 1st dose
• Dilution: 1 sacked Fortran with 1 litter of water ( 1
jug)

Diarrhea , nausea and abdominal cramping ,e.g.:


Expectation •
unable to sleep , busy for toileting thru the day

• Characteristic of the bowel :


• Clear and watery stool with yellowish in color , so

the view will be clear and easier to doctor to
clarified the diagnosis.

R:To get a good cooperation and make the procedure effective

3.Ask patient to explain in his or her own words


R: To make sure that patient get the information correctly

4. Encourage patient to ask question


R:open communication between patient and health care to allow verification of
understanding of given information
5. Allow repetition of the information
R: repeated information allow patient gain confidence
in self care ability.

• Risk of fall due to repetiton to toilet for pass motion
• Outcome:Patient will relate important of safety measure to
prevent falls
1. Asses patient if any history of falls
R:An individual may has risk of fall if he or she had falls in past 6
month
R:Use an id band as a identification to implement fall precaution
behaviour

2. Assess patient environment for factor of fall risk.(wet


surface,inadequate lighting)
R:Patient not familiar to the surrounding.
R:Place call bell within patient reach
3. Encourage patient to don shoes or slippers when walking

• Fluid volume deficit due to diarhea
Outcome: Patient understand factor of fluid deficit
1. Monitor vital sign
R:As a baseline.to monitor if any sign of hypotension
2. Maintain hydration
R:To prevent dehydration and maintain hydration status
3. Restrict solid food intake
R:To allow bowel clean for procedures
4. Monitor intake and output
R:Document every intake and output
