 A noun clause is a noun.
 As with other nound, it can function either as subject or an object in a sentence.

 Simple noun subject: Her speech was fascinating
 Noun clause subject: That she spoke without notes was fascinating

 Simple noun object: Many believe the results.


 Noun clause object: Many believe that “total immersion” is the best way to learn a
new language
NOTE
 A noun clause is a noun.
 Noun clauses are clauses that act like a noun in a sentence.
 As with other nouns, it can function either as a subject or an object in a sentence
 The formula is that+S+V
 we can include the word “that” or we can delete it, and the words that follor are still a noun
clause.

Finish the sentences below with a noun clause. Don’t forget to add a clause: that+S+V

What should they do? What they should do is obvious
NOTE
Question used linking verb before the subject. However, noun clause after a question word we
don’t use any linking verb.
Question -> Lingking verb + Subject + verb
Noun Clause -> Subject + verb
EXERCISE 1
Are these noun clauses correct or incorrect? Why?

2. I’m not sure what is the answer.
3. Does anyone know how dolphins communicates with each other?
4. It’s important to ask when do you not understand something.

NOUN CLAUSES –WITH
WHETHER OR IF
Some noun clauses begin with if or whether, especially inderect questions. These also keep the
normal word order (S+V).
Is Diw finished working yet?

Beginning of statement Noun clause

EXAMPLE –WHETHER OR IF
 Direct question: Do you plan to transfer to a four-year college?
 Inderect question: I’d like to know if you plan to transfer to a four-year college (or not).

 Direct question: Does she speak more than two languages?


 Inderect question: I wonder If she speaks more than two languages.

 Direct question: have you written an essay before?


 Inderect question:

My teachers always ask me whether (or not) I have written an esay before.
My teachers always ask me whether I have written an essay before (or not).
NOTE
 There’s no real difference between if and whether. Both are similar it is about having choices.
 You can use them interchangeably.
 If you want to use “or not” make sure “if” you can put at the end of the sentence; “whether”
either right after “whether” or at the end.
