Short/Medium Range Ultrasonic Testing (SRUT/MRUT)
2
Short-Range Guided Wave is a technique which uses low frequency sound waves to flood the wall thickness
of a pipe or a plate, and then reflect back at interfaces such as cracking or corrosion/pitting. A standard ½”
near field probe allows for corrosion and defect inspection in limited space and close proximity situations.
This technique is to be used as a screening tool only as remaining wall thickness measurements cannot be
achieved. However, reflection distance can be measured with precise accuracy.

The short range guided wave technique uses a modified B-Scan graph but displays information in terms of
“Plan View” using surface distance calculations. This technology can detect, image, record amplitude, size,
and record X-Y location of corrosion and /or various defects

Application & Feature:
3
The Short Range Guided Wave Ultrasonic Technique (SRGUT) was designed to test the annular
plate of above ground storage tanks (AST’s) while the tank remains in-service and for detecting
corrosion under pipe supports. The technique is based on the concept of pulsing guided laminar
waves into the base material from the chime area. The waves propagate into the annular plate.
When corrosion, pitting, erosion are present the ultrasonic waves mode convert and are received
by the same transducer.

The technique is also being used to test for corrosion at soil air interfaces, and similar difficult to
access locations such as corrosion under pipe support.
Feature:
Tests 100% of surface area roughly 2 meter in length depending on length and conditions
 Identify areas of corrosion or erosion and sizing (X & Y)
 Data acquisition and display analysis performed using a laptop.
 Can quickly scan and image under supports, annular plates, and cement vault walls.

Limitations include the lack of Top or Bottom

clearance for Probe Placement

Pre – requisite to apply SRUT
 Surface condition under the probe shall be free on corrosion and heavy coatings to allow a proper UT propagation.
 The maximum surface temperature is 150F

Set - up:
SRUT equipment uses set of probes drawing power directly from equipment. No external power supply is required.

Thickness Ranges:

Although Short Range Ultrasonic testing – SRUT is a screening technique used on wall thickness range of 6 to 16 mm,
this test method can locate the discontinuity location and size to an accuracy of ±10%. SRUT can detect discontinuities
such as corrosion, pitting & erosion. Generally detected discontinuities are reported in the percentage remaining wall
thickness and categorized into various severity level.

Ideal Applications:
• Most ideal for rapid detection of corrosion and erosion including sizing in accessible areas for up to 2metres
length under structures e.g. Annular rings, Braces, brackets, saddles, legs etc
• Short Range Ultrasonic testing can detect metal loss in steel plates and pipe walls concealed under the
support structures or annular plates in tanks
• Tank floor annular ring, annular plate
• Under pipe support and pressure vessel support
• Pipes above 200mm diameter and any flat surface

Limitations:
• Short Range Ultrasonic testing (SRUT) can be conducted at ambient temperature only
• Wall thickness measurement accuracy is ±10% as compared to conventional ultrasonic testing
• Although SRUT can detect discontinuities on the internal or external wall, this test method cannot
discriminate between the inner wall or outer wall discontinuities
• Short Range Ultrasonic testing (SRUT) can be conducted on 6 to 16 mm thickness range
