DIRECTING
PEOPLE ON THE
JOB
2022 October GROUP 9
WHAT IS AN Order is a specific message that is conveyed by a leader to
a follower by influencing them to take desired action.
ORDER?

WHAT IS AN • When the order is simple and the message can be

clearly heard.
ORDER?
• When privacy is important
• When the follower is intelligent and reliable
• When the demonstration is involved

2
WHEN TO HAVE WRITTEN ORDERS?
• When precise figures or complicated details are involved
• When orders must be passed on to someone else
• When the workers involved are slow to understand and forgetful.
• When you want to hold the receiver strictly accountable
• When particular sequence must be followed exactly
• When a notice board can be suitably used
• When you are quoting general instructions on higher authority
• When a record is desirable, perhaps the order may need to be referred to
in the future

3
ORDER (WETHER VERBAL OR WRITTEN) WILL FALL
INTO THESE FOUR DISTINCT CATEGORIES:

• A request
• A suggestion
• Asking for volunteers
• A direct order

4
REQUEST

You should use a request whenever you want specific action from the
people like these:
a. Anyone who is interested in his work. Am older person, touchy.
b. Someone who welcomes responsibility
c. Someone who is interested in advancement
d. A group of experienced personnel with good morale: or
e. Someone whose initiative you want to develop

5
ASKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

The leader explains what is to be done and asks for volunteers for:
• Jobs that are dangerous or disagreeable
• For extra heavy work
• For jobs that require overtime
• When you want a skilled worker to do a special unskilled job

6
Many managers and
supervisors have never thought
of asking for volunteers, or
using request or suggestions.
They have just been telling
people what to do.

7
DIRECT ORDER OR COMMAND

This is the last alternative. One should only use a direct order under
the following circumstances.
• In case of danger or extreme urgency
• When haste is important
• With lazy and indifferent workers, or chronic objectors
• For careless workers
• When all other methods have failed repeatedly

9
TO BE ACCEPTABLE
a. You make your order justified when you explain why the action must be
taken.

b. To make your order tactful, you deliver it in a way that will not adversely
affect your relationship with the receiver.

c. To make your order challenging, present it to him in a way that makes him
see it is a worthwhile challenge to his knowledge, skill, and experience.

d. Give sufficient authority. Whenever you give an order, make sure it is

accompanied by sufficient authority by giving the receiver enough authority to
enable him to carry out the order without being frustrated.

10
ORDER HAS THREE MEANINGS:
• The meaning you think you convey
• The meaning you do convey, directly and by implication
• The meaning the receiver thinks you convey
