WHY WAS THE GLOBE BUILT?

HISTORY OF THE GLOBE
THEATRE

• Built in 1598 and opened in 1599


• Burned down in 1613 from a cannon blast* during the play of
„Henry VIII.”
• Rebuilt and reopened in 1614
• Closed down by Puritans (trying to purify* England) in 1642 and was
torn
down* in 1644
• In 1996, a replica* was built on the original site* where people that can
visit it today

FACTS ABOUT THE GLOBE
THEATHRE

• The original globe was 3 stories high and could held about 3,000 people
• Located in Southwark* near the Thames River
(Just outside of downtown London)
• No roof so they relied on sunlight
• Was not allowed to be build in the city centre of London becaue crowds
often became rowdy
