AI AND ITS EFFECT ON

DRAFTING AND CAD

Introducing artificial intelligence (AI) its preconceptions, advances, and how it will
influence CAD design.

Table of Contents:
• AI preconceptions.
• AI Advancements.
• How will AI effect drafting and mechanical design
• Project Dreamcatcher
• Conclusion
AI AND ITS PRECONCEPTIONS
Ten years ago, machine learning systems were only just getting a hang of
identifying what the subject of a photograph was. Is this a bear or is this a dog?
Today’s systems can write entire paragraphs defining a scene from its computer
vision.
• Machines learn by themselves
• Currently machines cannot learn by themselves, and they are currently still very limited on
what they can do.

• Machines will take over jobs

• AI would not be able to take over jobs such as Therapists, teachers, lawyers, management
professionals, or social workers. AI would also not be able to do things like use empathy, or
work that requires precise hand eye coordination

• AI will surpass humans

•  that would take, probably another 50 years or so because AI still doesn’t have cognitive
abilities such as creativity or emotion recognition
AI ADVANCEMENTS
o Vision- continuous improvement of object o Personal assistance- algorithm that puts

o Speech recognition- has been around for questions.
decades but has become more o Medical diagnostics- symptom checkers

o Games- programed characters that act a diagnosis.
certain way (NPC).
o Neural networks- prior to 2020, the AI
industry had eight generally accepted
neural network formats. After 2020 that
number dropped down to two.
HOW WILL AI EFFECT DRAFTING
AND MECHANICAL DESIGN?
• The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the drafting and mechanical design industry is expected
to have a significant impact in the coming years. AI technology has the potential to automate
many of the tedious and time-consuming tasks involved in drafting and design, such as creating
detailed 3D models and generating technical drawings. This can help to increase the speed and
efficiency of the design process, allowing designers to focus on more creative and strategic
tasks. In addition, AI can also be used to improve the accuracy and precision of designs, as it is
able to analyze vast amounts of data and identify potential errors or inconsistencies that may
not be easily detectable by humans. This can help to reduce the number of costly mistakes and
rework, improving the overall quality of the final designs.
PROJECT DREAMCATCHER
• AI is becoming relevant in many different engineering applications, from simplifying large
swaths of information down directly to generating entire designs that need only minor
editing. Autodesk understands this with Project dreamcatcher, a generative design AI
intended to be implemented directly into Autocad. While Solidworks has had forms of
generative design for many years, it’s only been in the last 3-5 years that the generated
design structures had reached the degree of precision that would dictate its use.

CONCLUSION
The creation of artificial intelligence was inspired after the human brain. This is a
common reason why many to hold preconceived notions about AI. Many of these
notions have been put to rest with new advancements in recent years.

AI will continue advancing and with this comes the question, how far will AI go? Is
there a limit to what it can do?
