Sperm-cervical mucus
interaction
The cervix and its secretion have several functions
in sperm transport:
>receptivity to penetration by sperm during
midcycle with decreased efficiency at other times
>protection of sperm from the hostile
environment
>provision of nutrient to supplement the energy
requirements of sperm
>filtering out of abnormal sperm
>serving as reservoir for spermatozoa
>exerting an influence on sperm capacitation
Capacitation
- Is the process by which spermatozoa acquire
the capacity to penetrate the various layers
surrounding the oocyte during fertilization.
- It is looked upon as a final maturation of
spermatozoa and occurs in the female
reproductive tract.
- Estimated 1 hour in humans
- Associated with hyperactivation of sperm
motility which facilitates sperm penetration,
- A prerequisite for the loss of the acrosomal
membrane
Sperm in uterus
Factors influencing transport of sperm through
the uterus:
>intrinsic motility of the spermatozoa
>contractility of the genital tract
>ciliary movements along the surface of
the endometrium
Large numbers of leukocytes appear in the
uterine cavity 10-24 hrs after spermatozoa
enter, and they remove excess spermatozoa by
phagocytosis
Uterotubal Junction
Acts as a selective barrier
preventing the entry of non-motile
spermatozoa
The numbers of spermatozoa that
reach the uterus at times other
than the periovulatory phase of the
cycle are substantially diminished
Sperm in the Fallopian Tube
Spermatozoa can pass from the
external cervical os to the distal end
of the oviduct and into the
abdominal cavity within 5 minutes
Motile spermatozoa have been
observed in the ampullary portion of
the tube and in the abdominal cavity
for up to 85 hrs after coitus
Mother and Baby
There is a unique
emotional and
physical bond between
mother and her child.

Breastfeeding
activates hormones
that encourage
closeness and intimacy
