PROCEDURE
 Take 250 g of soil sample in a beaker
 Add sufficient amount of distilled
water to moisten the soil while
stirring with spatula
 Continue to add water and stir until
the soil is just saturated
CRITERIA
 Water should not stand on the surface of
soil paste
 The soil paste should look as a
homogenous mixture of soil and water
 Paste should glisten as it reflects light
 Paste flows slightly when the container is
tilted
 Paste slides freely and cleanly off the
spatula
 It should not stiffen markedly or lose its
SIGNIFICANCE
 Saturated soil paste is prepared to
determine the soil pH
 It is used to get saturated soil extract
for chemical analysis. e.g ECe
 Saturated soil paste is also used to
determine the saturation percentage
of a soil
