The Global divides: South and

North
 The concept of a gap between the Global North and the Global South in
terms of development and wealth.
 The concept of Global North and Global South (or North–South divide in
a global context) is used to describe a grouping of countries along socio-
economic and political characteristics.
Global North

 The Global North correlates with the Western world—excluding Japan, South
Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Israel.
 The Global North does not refer to a geographic region in any traditional sense
but rather to the relative power and wealth of countries in distinct parts of the
world.
Global South

 The Global South is a term often used to identify the regions of Latin America,
Asia, Africa, and Oceania. It is one of a family of terms, including "Third World"
and "Periphery", that denote regions outside Europe and North America, mostly
(though not all) low-income and often politically or culturally marginalized
countries on one side of the so-called divide, the other side being the countries of
the Global North (often equated with developed countries).
 South largely corresponds with the developing countries (previously called "Third
World") and the Eastern world.
The Global North (in blue) includes many countries in the Northern Hemisphere and
also some, such as Australia and New Zealand, that are located in the Southern
Hemisphere. The Global South (in red) includes many countries in the southern
hemisphere and some in the northern hemisphere. Kingj123/Public Domain.
Why were the North and South divide?

 The division began long before the onset of the war in 1861. It had many
causes, but there were two main issues that split the nation: first was the
issue of slavery, and second was the balance of power in the federal
government. The South was primarily an agrarian society.
Why is there global north and global South?

 As terms, the North (also called the First World ) and the South
emerged during the 1970s in recognition of the greater economic
and political power of the Third World, and in reaction to growing
dissatisfaction with earlier terms, which were increasingly seen as
pejorative.
What are the causes of global divides?

 The “double divide” is caused by political power, economic dependency, and

importation/exportation of resources.

What is the difference between Global North and global south?

 Global North represent the economically developed societies of Europe, North

America, Australia, Israel, South Africa, amongst others, the Global South
represents the economically backward countries of Africa, India, China, Brazil,
Mexico amongst others.
