Garth’s ‘crazy idea’ was an invention for an

‘umbrella hat’- an umbrella positioned on a hat

1. Garth was excited about his invention; he
believe that it was something that was very
useful and lots of people would want to won
one.
2. The problem of staying dry in wet weather
and having both hand free so you could carry
other things.
3. He went outside on a rainy and windy day to
see if the invention protected him from the
weather.

4. The Barker Boys were hostile toward Garth
(unfriendly and aggressive).
5. He pulled it off his head and threw it on the
ground.
6. They laughed at it in a cruel way. Todd Barker
said cruel things about the invention and
insulated Garth.
7. He thought it looked stupid (dumb) and that
no one would want to wear it.

8. Garth felt very upset and shaken (trembling). The boys had made him feel stupid (humiliated).
9. He saw a lady standing behind him, looking at him as if she was worried about him (peering at him
with concern).

10. She was very interested in it and thought it was a wonderful idea.
11. Garth’s mood changed and he felt much happier (brightening).

12. The lady’s advice was that he shouldn’t
let stupid boys (like the Barker Boys)
make him feel bad; that he should
continue to invent things because one
day he would make something really
good.
13. She wanted to organise a competition
to find the best young inventor in the
town, to encourage children with
creative ideas.
14. He felt much better and more
enthusiastic ( the implication is that
the lady’s interest made him believe in
himself. He started to think of lots of
new idea for inventions.

Suggestions:
2. The lady’s attitude was completely the opposite: she thought the invention was very interesting and a very good idea,
coming from such a young boy. She could see Garth’s potential (what he might be able to do in the future) by looing
at his invention.
3. She told Garth not to let negative people (like the Barker Boys) who did not know anything about invention, make him
feel stupid and small. She also made the point that Garth should keep inventing because one day he might create
something really great.
4. He felt better because the lady had a positive, encouraging attitude and showed that she believed in him and other
children like him. Her comments and her idea to organise the competition showed this.
