• The beginning of the Church Year
• Celebrating the first coming of the Lord.
• The Color is Violet
• Advent has 4 weeks
o 1st Sunday of Advent (Violet)
o 2nd Sunday of Advent (Violet)
o 3rd Sunday of Advent (Rose) [Gaudete Sunday]
o 4th Sunday of Advent (Violet)
• Symbolizes the preparation of Mary for the coming of the Lord
• The Annunciation of the Lord
• 9 days of simbang gabi
 Lenten Season
• All weekdays of Lent take precedence over obligatory memorials (M)
• The Sixth Sunday of Lent marks the beginning of the HOLY WEEK
(also known as Palm Sunday).
• Holy Week
 Palm Sunday : Blessing for Palaspas
 Holy Monday : Mass
 Holy Tuesday : Lenten Recollection
 Holy Wednesday : Annointing of the Sick
 Maundy Thursday : Last Supper of the Lord / Washing of the Feet
 Good Friday : Veneration of the Cross
 Black Saturday : Muling pagkabuhay
 Easter Sunday : Salubong
 Christmas season
• Celebrates Jesus’ Birth, The Incarnation, God
becoming Man
• Has 2 focal points:
o Christmas Days (Dec. 25) with its octave.
o Solemnity of the Epiphany (Including the
Baptism of the Lord)
o The Color is White
 Lenten Season
• The season where we give ourselves to prayer and penance
• We prepare for Easter or the Reincarnation of the Lord.
• Starts from the Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper
(Holy Thursday).
• Gloria is not said (except for different solemnities and feasts)
• The Sundays of lent have priorities over all solemnities and feasts of the Lord
o 1st Sunday of Lent (Violet)
o 2nd Sunday of Lent (Violet)
o 3rd Sunday of Lent (Violet)
o 4th Sunday of Lent / Laetare Sunday (Rose)
o 5th Sunday of Lent (Violet)
Easter Triduum
• Covers the Three days passion and resurrection of Christ.
• The highest point of the Liturgical Time.
• Phase:
 Holy Thursday : Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper
 Good Friday : solemn commemoration of the Lord’s Passion and Death
 Black Saturday : Easter Vigil
• The Triduum closes in the evening of Easter Sunday.
• The Color is white , but red on Good Friday.
Easter Season
• Covers the 50 days between Easter Sunday and Pentecost.
• Easter Octave – the first 8 days after Easter Sunday
• The Color is White.
• On the 40th day after Easter Sunday we celebrate the Ascension of
our Lord to Heaven.
• On the next Sunday after the Ascension of our Lord, we celebrate the
coming of the Holy Spirit to the church (Pentecost)
Sundays in Ordinary Time
• Covers different Solemnities, Feasts, Memorials related to the church
• Falls into two groups
a. Sundays between the epiphany and ash Wednesday
b. Sundays between Pentecost and Advent
• The last Sunday of the liturgical year is the Solemnity of Christ the
King.
